    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

buying rear shocks off new gen. bike?

Hi,

I was checking ebay for some rear shocks and was shocked(:)) at how low prices are for stock units off new bikes- a 2002 gsxr monoshock was going for $35!

Anybody have any advice in looking for dual shocks off a modern bike to replace the old GS pair? Right now my '77 750L looks to have progressive shocks put on years ago but now are pretty ratty.
 
try Yamahas XJR1200/1300 shocks as there the same length or Kawaski zrx1200 or Hondas cb1300.. I know the Kawa is abou 1" longer
 
man, it's HARD to search for twin shocks. I spent an hour and a half with keyword search "-motorcycle brand- shocks" and didn't come up with many 90s-present cheap stock dual shocks. I guess people are holding on to them... yet monoshocks are so cheap!

Lots of mono-shocks get replaced by racers with Ohlins and Fox.

I guesss it all depends on what you call cheap.

I have no idea if these are good shocks, but I found them looking for a mono for my bike. They're new, and they don't look too bad.

If you want used, there are lots out there.
 
Almost all of the '90s-era OEM twin shocks were absolute crap, too.

ZRX's had decent (KYB, I think?) piggyback shocks, but they're quite a bit longer than most GS shocks -- I think they were 14" or 14.5" eye-to-eye, while most GS shocks were 13" or a bit shorter.

Plus, you have to have new bushings made -- the mounting studs are different diameters.

And then you go for a ride and discover that... they're already worn out. :evil: (They were halfway decent shocks when new, but didn't last long.)

And the bike won't go on the centerstand, and on the kickstand it leans over so far that a bird perching on the mirror will make it topple...

With suspension, it's usually not worth farting around with other people's used OEM junk. IM(ns)HO.

With Progressive or Hagons, it's $225 or so, five minutes to install, and you're done and sorted for the next ten years.
 
I just find it odd that decent monoshocks of recent sportbikes go real cheap, the same price as twin shocks from decades ago. I assumed there'd be gas shocks off a hornet/zrx somewhere in that price range worth looking into-turns out there aren't any.

As Billy said, many replace the stock mono units with aftermarket for performance reasons. It's a supply and demand thing.

It's still hard finding a good mono for the 750ES I'm working on, so I feel your pain.

Careful with those. There were some sellers from Asia selling the piggybacks from the "race bred" scooters made over there. No way that a shock built for a 150 scooter that weighs a couple hundred pounds will handle the stresses from a GS.

Like I said, I have no idea if they are good or not. I could always post pictures of Ohlins or Works, but when they cost more than the bike ....
 
and ZRX shocks are NOT cheap....I've seen sets go for over $300.....but rarely under $200
