BWringers & TWR's Excellent Adventure II

BWringer and I went on our 2nd annual "Marathon BC Run" yesterday. Here are a few highlights. Friday there is a big storm coming in (orange & red radar) so I get home after work ASAP and am pushing the bike up in the back of the truck and the wind and rain now starts to really come down. I am commited at this point so I quickly tie the front down as it starts to hail and the local storm sirens are going off. I get the truck halfway backed into the garage and finish getting the bike strapped down and am now ready to go. I proceed to head to I-65 in a steady rain and think to myself the last time I did this I was riding and not driving. Yes, he can be taught. ;) On the drive down it poured so hard I had the wipers on full blast and traffic slowed down several times but I thought to myself this sure beats riding, I am nice and dry and no chance of getting hit by another microburst, at least on two wheels. I get to Brians and the rain has died off slightly although he said the worst part of the front just came through. We get the bike in the garage and are now ready for tomorrow. Aparrently about 3 AM another massive front came through and woke up Brian and Marge. I, of course did not hear a thing. We check the radar and the front is moving through and we delay our departure to avoid the rain. We finally get going and the roads are wet but the sky is good. We head to Gatesville in our usual "not so direct" way and once we get to the county roads they are still partially wet and the corners have lots of debris from the previous nights rain. We run through some standing water on the way there but no big deal. We get there and Robin tells us she barely made it in with all the standing water on the roads. We have a good breakfast and proceed to head towards to IN45. 45 is pretty dirty in the corners with gravel and tree remnants and then there is a bridge out where it turns south. We hit a couple backroads and get around it and keep heading south. 450 is also very messy but are commited (or should be). At Williams by the railroad underpass there is a lot of standing water, maybe 100 feet or so. I am chasing Brian as usual and he has already gone though it with the V-Strom. I am on my now "L-Strom" and proceed to make my way through and get about halfway through the water hazard and look down to see that my pegs are under water and lift my feet up and keep going. I make it through the rest of the hazard without incident. The rest of the day goes very well with a couple of new roads thrown in until we are coming back up 135 by Story. There is a car off the road stuck in the water and a guy in a truck helping out. They are arguing about who is going is getting wet to hook up the chain but the water is way too deep even for my "L-Strom". We go around and head back. Even with the "water hazards" we still ended up with 430 miles for the day. Here are a few pics of our travels.

I did not think the "L-Strom" would make it through this one. The curve just south of Story.

Lucky Dawgs! Dry here but 100 degree plus heat index. No way I could make riding in this sound fun.

That looks like an incredible trip! I can't believe the standing water!

We run into that at least every other Brown County Rally. Just part of the fun!:D

#4 Today, 12:25 PM cowboyup3371 Looks like a nice ride. Do you know if they ever got that car out of the lake? LOL

Yes, they pulled it out shortly after I took the picture. It started and blew a full exhaust system of water out the tailpipe. Pretty funny actually since it was not my car.

Today 07:07 PM marvinsc Lucky Dawgs! Dry here but 100 degree plus heat index. No way I could make riding in this sound fun.

Scott, it barely made it to the low 90's so we got lucky on heat. A bit humid though with all the water evaporating. ;) Of the two new roads Brian found and we tried one will possibly be included in the next years 62/66 run. Excellent pavement, good twisties and very few houses with driveways. We were just "scouting" for everyone else and not having any fun at all. :p :dancing:

In retrospect...I should've gone with you guys. I spent the weekend doing a little wrenching and alot of honey-do list items.....Oh well, they needed to be done. Besides, you guys wore me out on the Epic Good Friday ride......

My daughter and about 6 of her friends went to the Dave Matthews concert Friday night and got hit with a really strong storm. It's a two day concert and they had planned on camping out Friday night. Instead, they all stayed at our house and went back to the concert venue Saturday morning, after a great breakfast that good 'ole Dad cooked for them. I make a mean biscuits and gravy.... They're all great kids and it wasn't a big deal....except for all the wet clothes, blankets, sleeping bags and mud.

On the plus side, I had two of her guy friends pick up a spare 750 engine and set it on my workbench, so, it wasn't all bad......:)

Larry, although you were missed it sounds like you had some quality "Dad" time and were able to help out your daughter. Does the GK have pontoons? ;)

We did have to ford some water on 450 near Williams. It was maybe only a foot deep.

It was sorta funny to watch a couple of chrome barges approach the water and turn around. Wassamatta? Afraid of a little H2O? It's good for ya...

We encountered the first water crossing just as the first passing zone in a while opened up. I pulled out and... whoahaaaaaooooooo... aw hell, I'm going through anyway. That was sort of interesting...

135 was still underwater late in the day, which was unusual -- it usually clears off fairly quickly. I believe we encountered the stuck truck at around 7:00 pm, and it had stopped raining in that area around 9:00 am. The water there was still very deep and had a pretty strong current, too. Strong enough to shove that truck off course, so I figured there was no reason to risk it when I knew a good way around.

Here's the first part of this epic journey -- Indy to Salem, Indiana - 278 miles. LOTS of county roads, which Google apparently chokes on -- a few twists and turns are missing.

Here's part two: Salem back to Indy, with a bit of backtracking here and there. 130 miles.

Also, we looked for but never found the gloriously cheesy Indiana Motorcycle Safety Memorial, which wasted at least 25 miles. And check out this chickonabike we missed!
