A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can you paint over chrome??

I have an old, K&G luggage rack that has seen better days... it has some areas where the chrome plate has flaked off, some areas are rusted, and some places actually look good.

Just to make it functional, I thought I might try to paint it black using spray bombs to improve its appearance. It's not worth getting re-chromed (I would think a new one would be cheaper).

I'm not trying to make this a showpiece, just want to "freshen" it up a bit.

The question is, how do I prep the good chrome areas? Will a good sanding to scuff up the chrome do it??

Any recomendations on the kind of primer/paint I should use?? I thought would just paint it black & with a clearcoat over top - simple spray bomb process.

TIA,

Mike

Self etching primer sticks to chrome really well. You can buy dupli-color bombs at Auto-Zone.

I agree. You're going to want to use "self etching" primer. Another thing, you'll want to get as much of the flaking off as you possibly can. Once chrome starts to flake it just keeps on going, so doing this now will help preserve the colour and primer you end up using. If you dont, it will simply flake off with the chrome. Use some 400 grit to prep it before you hit it with the primer. If you're worried about pitting i think they sell high build etching primer as well and that will help fill some of the pitting.

Scuff the chrome with a fine sandpaper, 800 or so

Then self etching primer as above and paint from there

if you have a sandbaster just blast the chrome off then paint

Coolest thing about self etching primer is it eliminates the need for prep. If its a smooth surface then the paints do the work for you. Leave it smooth, you'll love the finish!
