A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

can you replace your oil filter with a external one on a 1984 gsx 550? It would make thins alot simpler!

It is possible, not pratical everthing would have to be hand made

AOD: Try changing the oil on a KZ550. That is a retarded and filthy job. :)

Oil filter relocation kits are sometimes available for certain modded cars, but I've never seen one made for a GS.

It would be mechanically possible, yes, but you'd be on your own with machining and engineering all the adaptors, etc.

It sure would be nice to have an adaptor that lets you use a spin-on filter instead of mucking around with that silly o-ring, though.

At least my GS850 has more room to work than Adam's 550!

I'm just dreaming here, but what the heck.

Y'know, what would be neat is a adaptor that's a replacement for the oil filter cover. It would fit down into the oil filter cavity a bit. You'd bolt it into place (dealing with that furshlugginger 3 lobed o-ring for the last time), and it would have an fitting for a standard spin-on car oil filter. The little filter from my Toyota would fit nicely, for example. There are some even smaller car filters, and many motorcycle filters are even smaller.

The other end of the adaptor would mate with the center tube inside the oil filter cavity on the engine.

You would then only have one additional seal, the one at the base of the filter itself. I think it's safe to say these are proven to be highly reliable.

Many details are unknown, of course -- do oil flow and direction match up between the GS and cars? Would it cause too much of a pressure drop, or restrict flow? Does motorcycle oil run too hot for car filters? Would the anti-drainback valve present any problems? How would you pick which filter to use -- there are many commonly available motorcycle filters which might be better choices than car filters?

I can think of a few benefits, too, and not just more convenient oil changes. There would be a tiny bit of added cooling and a small amount of added oil capacity. You could take advantage of much-improved filtration available in premium car filters like the Purolator Pure1. You could find filters in any auto parts store.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

Anyone got a metal lathe and a test GS?

oil flow

oil flow

I'm guessing here, but doesn't the oil enter through the center of the filter, flow through the element and then back into the oil pan?

oil filter

oil filter

yea you would probably have to get a disk of aluminum and find a c&c machine shop to design and cut the adapter peice iam going to do it this winter if the price isnt to high. got a cool pic of a remote oil filter cant get on the post sorry[/img]

No, Oil goes in from the outside of the element, and out of the filter through the inside centre hole. Car filters are the same, oil comes In to the filter through the small outer holes, and then through the element, and out of the filter via the larger threaded centre hole.
