A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Quick question, can the floats be dipped (soaked) in the carb cleaner with the rest of the parts or is there a more preffered method for cleaning them? One set of mine looks to be quite alot worse then the other set. Thanks for the help!

I only dip things made of metal. To clean the floats you can try some spray carb cleaner on a rag and then wiping them down a little. Scotchbrite pad can be used as well - just don't bend the metal arms. Go easy.

I have never dipped floats, but I have seen what the "dip" can do to other plastic parts.

Not sure I would want to try it, unless I had a spare set of junk floats sitting around.

.

I'll try some spray carb cleaner and some scotch pads. I figured since they are metal, it shouldn't hurt to soak them but I've not seen anybody recommend it.

...aaaaaand right here is a good reason to reveal to the GSR Hive Mind what fracking bike you are working on when you have a question.

Most GS carbs (all the CV carbs, anyway) have foam floats, so spray carb cleaner and any solvents are strictly verboten. Sea Foam won't hurt them, but don't try stronger stuff. If they're really cruddy, replacement is the best option.

If your floats are really made of metal, then obviously you can attack them with stronger stuff. However, I would still not put metal floats in the strong caustic solution of carb dip, although spray carb cleaner should be OK.

Chalk it up to being a rookie here. :p Our project bike is an 81 GS450L. The floats are made of what appears to be copper or brass. Some sort of thin metal. I got them cleaned up pretty nicely with some #0000 steel wool. Nice and purty like now. Just waiting on the carb body soak to be complete to finish the rebuild. I appreciate the info!
