    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Carb Cleaning (oh no, not another...)

Ok, this is likely a dumb one, but... It would appear my GS650GLX carbs have never seen a thorough cleaning as the air screw caps are still on and the little holes in the caps are pristine. So, my question (and assumption) is I do need to pop these covers off and "gently seat the screws counting the turns" and then remove them for proper cleaning?

I would have assumed that sometime during the past 26 years and 24K miles, the thought of cleaning the carbs would have crossed the PO's mind:? ? Apparently not, though, those little buggers have not been removed before.

Also, after the cleaning and subsequent adjustments:shock:, does anyone ever reinstall the caps? Thanks for your help.

You got it. :) Count the turns to close them. Keep in mind that you may want to deviate slightly from the origional settings though.

A small drill bit or a punch. These are just sheet metal, so don't get carried away. I remember one guy who drilled completely through the air screw...

Never heard of putting the caps back in place.

Are your carbs exhibiting problems, or are you cleaning them simply because they're -- umm, virginal?
 
Shops are required to put them back in! well at least there suppossed to.

Thanks, Guys. Well, to answer your question, Robert, it all began when I got the bike this late January. It started "ok", but the idle was real rough and would die if allowed to idle for more than 15-20 seconds. Then I noticed gas leaking from two of the carbs by the drain screw. Then I noticed a significant amount of gas in the oil. So considering all these factors, and the fact that the GS650 is for my son (I have my own bike; Kawa KZ1000), I figured a thorough cleaning and replacement of all gaskets and o-rings was the way to go. I am also doing a valve clearance check/adjustment while I'm replacing walve cover and breather gaskets, as well as a chain tensioner rebuild (leaks alot).

Plus I got this great deal on o-rings from this Robert Barr fellow, and thought; Jeez, how could I not do this :-D.....
