If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

So I took my carbs to my local bike shop who is a good friend of mine and we took apart the carbs together and we found that the floats and the float needles will all need to be replaced and thats not including the couple of bolts that we stripped to take it apart and the new seals so its getting alil pricey, so I wanted to look on ebay for a better set that will have less things to be replaced and weigh my options but I only found a set of 82 gs 1000 carbs at the decent price and wasnt sure if these would even fit to my bike? I know you guys will know if it will fits.

Not certain, but being the same engine, it should.

How much is your friend charging you ? Normally, these carbs can be stripped down, dipped and rebuilt with just new o-rings. The o-rings can be purchased from cycleorings http://www.cycleorings.com/ for about $15, IIRC. I've getting ready to rebuild my third set and that's all they ever needed. :)

he is only charging me fifty bucks to stripped them down dip them and to rebuild them and all i have to do is get the parts, the best part he is showing me how to do it all so I can do it the next time, but when we started to take them apart we noticed the floats were bad and the needles need to be replaced, the po left gas in the carbs then let it sit for twenty years so the gas messed up the parts.

I know I could have done them myself but it nice to learn hands on plus I know it's done right

Out of morbid curiosity, what was wrong with floats? Can you post pic?

I will take a pic tomorrow and post it but he told me they need to be replaced. I read somewhere else that these carbs are just as bullet proof as the motor they connect to but I am not a carb person idk why.

The only reason to replace a float is if the adjustment tab has broken off or if it is leaking and no longer buoyant. At least that's the only reason I replace one. If it is just dirty, it can be cleaned.

Did your friend use an impact to remove the screws?
Does the floats float?
It's easy to f up these carbs if you don't have experience.
Did you check out the carb rebuilding tutorial from the home page of this site? This will give you all the info you need.
I have lots of spare carb parts. Let me know what you need and I may be able to save you from buying a spare set of carbs. I'll bet you really don't have to unless a carb body is murdered.

The screws I mess up are the stupid phillip head that I was repleceing any way but when I saw the floats they look dirty as hell and yes I read the entire carb rebuild section but I do not feel very comfortable working on them yet but I feel that I could but wanted help. I will go back to the bike shop tomorrow after work and recheck them and take pics

I am also curious to know why he felt the floats should be replaced. I find that quite odd.

well went back to the bike shop and he told me this and that and it was going to to cost x amount of dollars so I took the carbs back with me and said screw that, but when I got home I took all the float bowls off and saw that one float was so gunked up it looked really messed up but I shot it with carb cleaner and it alomst shine up like a new penny so I ordered the o-ring kit from cycleorings.com and went to a local suzuki shop and got the gaskets, then called up a friend up who goes to mmi in daytona and hes coming over with the carb dip and we will tackle it together for free, so thankyou all, I hope to have her purring like a kitty by monday.

PB Blaster is your friend. Spray all the screws and jets for a few days before you even attempt to take any of em out. Use a GOOD fitting screwdriver to remove em. Those brass jets and such can and will be your worst nightmare if you're not careful.
Take your time, you wont regret it!

Like Octain said, make sure you use a screwdriver that fits snug and proper in the jets, and give them a good dose of penetrating fluid before removing them.
Otherwise it is a piece of cake, you might want to replace all the star head screws with allen head bolts, looks pretty niffty too.;)
Let us know how you get on.
Mine looked like yours, and came out like brand new, so don't sweat it, the gunk cleans off.
Here are my before and afters, just to keep you motivated. ;)

hey man those carbs look great, got some ideas now- thanks

if i may ask what paint did you use and how did you apply the paint? ( powder coated?)

Thanks, but I must admit, I have no where near that sort of artistic flair, the scheme was plagiarized from a set that Renobruce did, with his permission of course.
Nothing as fancy as powder coat, I used high heat engine paint (aerosol can) and then baked them in the oven at 100C for about an hour.
The finish is really hard and chip and scratch proof.
Where are you from, I am a Bulawayo boy now living in Kempton Park.

Do you have to use high temp paint on the carbs or will regular rustoleam work?
