    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

OK - little question.

78 GS1000

Bike rides and runs great but I have a question for you.


I have strated to notice that when I put the bike on the CENTER STAND-
(Which it always is unles at a store or in parking lots.)

The rear tire extends the rear shocks and it is touching the ground.

Should I replace the rear shocks ????

Which ones should I get ?
WHERE do you recommend ?

Is your front wheel OFF the ground? Do you have extra weight on the back? Luggage rack, or something? It would not take much to offset the weight forward of the center stand.
 
Front wheel is on the ground.

Don't know anything about measurements - rides great/handles great
- but when on stand - both wheels are touching.

Looks and is equiped as shown below - STOCK.

I dunno dude.
My rear tire is off the ground when on the stand.
 
Do you have lowering bars on the bottom of the shocks? It looks like it does because the angle of the shock.
 
You MUST not have the correct length shocks on the bike. When the bike is on the centerstand, the shocks should be fully extended to the max stop.

Yep. Click on the pic of his bike and you can see them. I supect the bars are pivoting up to let the wheel drop farther.

Your shocks are probably OK. Even when bad they won't over-extend. You might try tightening the bolts on the bars.

Why not just remove the lowering bars?
 
off topic, but do you like those grips? I've been eyeing them on ebay but am worried they are plastic and/or cheaply put together.
 
Grips work great.
Nice and soft - ZERO COMPLAINTS.

I am going to look at this LOWERING BAR that you are commenting about.
The PO must have put them on on - I had no idea..

It does have lowering bars on it.
I would have never known and Ihave been tinkering with this thing for ever.

You learn something every day.

Looks like the bars are 3-4 inches in length. and set the shock back and up a little.

So this bike really should sit 3-4 inches higher.??????????

It seems like the previous owner tried to make the bike a bit more laid back with the lowering bars and those handle bars. Take those lowering bars off and and get some superbike handlebars, it will probably feel so much beter.

Lowering the back reduces ground clearance but also changes the steering geometry, reduces rake a tad, it will get more quick and nimble when you take them out, not much as you will only raise the back of the bike an inch or so. That combined with superbike bars will be a large change, way better to ride in the twisties.
 
Wow! It's like you just foung a $50 bill in an old coat! I always thought your bike looked a little lower than mine in the back, but I thought it was just the photo angle.

You'll be pleased with the changes once you lose those lowering blocks and get some good bars. I recommend Bikemaster's "Euro" bars.
 
How is this possible, without noticing a problem with handeling?
I have never seen this, but I imagine the shocks are not the 13.25 inch ones.
