If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey guys & gals, So I have a question that I couldn't find a good answer to. My GS850 does not have the center stand on it but I have some good tires and rims off another GS850 that I'd like to get on there. I also do not have one of those fancy motorcycle lifts.

Any suggestions on what I can safely use to get my tires changed?

Might have to rent an engine hoist and lift the entire bike.

What happened to your centerstand?

It's times like this that make me wonder the value of shedding a few pounds of weight.

.

Take a ratchet strap ( or some rope etc etc )around each shock and join them directly above the seat. Use a come along off the garage rafter..or tree limb and lift the rear off the ground. May want to have some blocks ready to sit the engine down on once you get it up far enough..then slowly let it settle on them ( leaving the come along there also ) to help stabalise it. Run the blocks length way between the frame tubes and set the oil pan down on them.

OH and be aware that to check the oil PROPERLY you also have to have the bike standing straight up like it is on the center stand also. If on the side stand youll get a false reading and way OVER FILL the crankcase, which isnt a good thing.

Ya the PO said that he could never get it up on the center stand and thought it was useless so he tossed it grrr. My parts bike has one, but obviously I need it on that one to get the tires off. Maybe I could get it up on the stand then support the bike somehow, remove the stand and install on my other bike.

Funnily enough, I don't have a garage or any trees....HAHA I cut down the only tree on my property when I bought the house.

Install the center stand on the working bike.
Move parts bike to where it will not be in the way.
Remove exhaust.
Block under the parts bike.
Make sure it is blocked up nice and not likely to fall over until you get the shinier bits off.
Grab your shovel.

I bought a not-so-fancy "Trackside" rear 'paddock' stand for $29.95 (my bike also didn't come with a center stand).

If I was looking to buy a bike and found that it did not have a center stand, that would definitely be a deal-breaker.

No stand, no sale. :p

Or you could talk him down to half price for the missing stand and buy one for $10 or so.

I have a box of center stands to sell but sadly none are from an 850. Is it the same as the 1000E?

I have not yet seen what year 850 is involved in this discussion, but in this case, it doesn't matter.

I just looked at the cross-reference charts for the center stand for the 850G.
The '79 850G stand only fits the '79 850G
The '80 850G stand only fits the '80 850G
The '81 850G stand only fits the '81 850G
The '82 850G stand only fits the '82 850G
The '83 850G stand also fits the '82 1100G and the '83 1100G.

No idea what little detail changed from one year to the next, but they all have different part numbers.

Oh, notice that none of the G stands fits the GL. I did not see if any of the GL stands work on other bikes.

.

It's likely the only difference is something you could fix easily with a hammer.

I use a floor jack for the right side and the sidestand on the left for the dirt bikes. Or just toss them on the ground. Either way works fine.
