If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Cheap Petcock Fix

Hi,
I made a very inexpensive modification to my GS1000 petcock. First off, the basic info came from this old thread http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=85178

It is no longer vacuum operated, but I am OK with that until I can save up some money to buy and OEM petcock.

Here is what I did in a few basic steps:
1. See the attached picture as to how I filled the curved part of the valve with JB weld. This turns PRI to OFF. ON and RES function as before. Sand to make a smooth surface.

2. I removed the back of the petcock and took out the rubber diaphram. I put a couple pieces of gasket material on each side to seal off the back. Don't forget to use gasket sealant!

3. Plug vacuum line on petcock, and cap the vacuum line by the carb.

4. Label PRI as OFF, and add a note by the key to "turn off fuel" (OK, a bit of adult ADHD in me so I need the reminder.)

No puddles of gas in the garage, total cost of about $10 if you don't have any JB weld or gasket material around.

If anyone has any improvements on this, I would love to hear them.

Cheers,
Lyle

if you grind the little tab off that stops the lever going up to the 12 o'clock position then when you park up turn the lever up to that position you are guaranteed a "fuel off" situation. may have to shorten the lever a bit if it fouls the tank!

similar to the thread you qouted but mine is a uk model so the fuel tap may be different

I capped my vacuum line off also, and I turn mine to the 9 o'clock position to turn the gas flow on. In the 6 o'clock position, it is off. I didn't have to do any filling or anything though. I tested it by keeping the feed hose over a bucket with the tank full of gas. No more flooded carbs, puddles on ground, or gas in oil. I'm curious as to why you felt the need to fill in a part of the petcock with goop.

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. :) And I wanted to make sure, since the diaphram is old and the o-ring shrivelled, that fuel would dribble out.

LK

My improvement on this procedure would be to freaking buy a new freaking petcock already...

Must... control... petcock... RANT!

HRRGGGghghhgnnnnhhhhhgggg!

Oh, and if you do, but the right one. I bought one for the wrong year and it is totally backasswards, just like me, apparently!!!

Eventually, yes. I've already dropped $40 on the rebuild kit. It is almost $90 to buy a new GS1000 OEM valve.
