A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cheapo fork oil, pros if any?

I get at least 2 changes from a 9 dollar quart of fork oil. Surely there are other ways to save money.

In the GS850 and GS1000 manuals Suzuki calls for SAE 10W/20 oil.

The GS550 and GS750 manuals states half and half SAE 10W-30 and ATF

Use fork oil if you want, I do, but it wouldn't bother me to use motor oil and/or with ATF, and other folks shouldn't either assuming they trust Suzuki's recommendation.
I've been using a 50/50 blend of dexronIII AFT and straight 20 wt engine oil for around 4 years now with no adverse effects. very easy to calculate the final weight of the 'fluid' using 8 wt as the value for ATF and 20 wt for the motor oil.

The W in engine oil is different to that in fork oil....

5w30 is approx eq to 20w fork oil. ATF fluid is about 10-12w.

No problems with use of either in forks from research I have done.

My last bottle of fork oil cost less than $0. I used it as filler when I ordered my tire to get above the free shipping value :D

Some good oil viscosity info here... http://www.peterverdonedesigns.com/lowspeed.htm

Thanks Ed, I think I'll attempt to switch my seals out. You think they're cheaper off Z1 or at a suzuki shop? Dumb question I know.

Hope you aren't going to wait for me to look up the prices when you are just a few clicks away from the answer of your own accord.:p:p

BTW, Z1's K&L fork seals are dirt cheap...and are sure to beat the Suzuki seals in terms of price by a large margin. Quality is another matter though...

I have Z1's seals on my 1000g, had about 15,000 miles on them last time I saw that bike....

In general stock seem to be better than K&L anything though! :)

I pulled my info from the web a while back but I'm definitely willing to be corrected, I didn't spend a lot of time on it... personally I use fork oil, life is too short! :D
