A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Choke Cable Identification

Good morning everyone. I'm trying to hunt down a choke cable for my 80 GS1000GL. I've looked through multiple online parts fiche, Partzilla, Babbits, PartsOutlaw, etc. They all show the choke cable, but the part number on each website is actually for the starter cable not the choke cable. Also tried MotionPro, but they don't make a choke cable for this model. I picked up a generic choke cable that supposedly would fit, but the threaded portion under the knob is too large for the steering stem and was also short several inches. Anyone have a good part number or other ideas for locating the right cable?

Thanks!

In Japan motorcycle wording, what we call a choke cable is called a starter cable as it is only used when starting the bike. These carbs don't have a choke, but an enricher, maybe a more correct would be enricher cable. Get one of those starter cables you've seen listed & you should be fine...Beware, I give no guarantees with my opinions. Good luck.

Much appreciated! Knowing that, I'm onto the second half of the problem: finding the part. I've checked all the usual suspects, Partzilla, Babbits, BikeBandit, PartsOutlaw, etc., but no one stocks that particular cable. Found a couple of used ones on ebay, but I'd really rather not go that route.

I found one on JT Motorsports, but with shipping it comes out to $45. It hurts, but unless I can find an alternate, one more sacrifice to the GS gods is coming.

I'm always surprised at what my local Suzuki dealer happens to have in stock. It's at least worth a phone call, if not a visit.

I would, but the nearest Suzuki dealer of any sort is about 2 hours from me. Life in the middle of nowhere! After a bit more poking, I think I just have to pony up the $45 bucks. Thanks for the input though!

Sorry man, I may help with the easy questions but these harder ones I've got leave to someone else. It seems VERRRY odd, to me, that the "80" model GS850, GS1100's, even the chain dr. "80" GS1000L share the same choke (starter) cable (45110), but the GS1000 G & GL's show a different part # (49010), that just doesn't make sense...

Both my GSs have the centre-mounted choke cable. One of them has a British Leyland Mini cable (or it might have been a Morris 1100) welded in place to an adapter. The other one has an Avenger bonnet release cable as a choke cable.

If you have the time, just keep an eye on Ebay. I picked up a NOS cable for my bike at a reasonable price.
