Choke not staying in place (1980 GS1100ex wont idle)

ok well the bike started and was running fine last night, but today when i try to start the bike it was very labored, when it finnaly started the bike would have trouble staying running, and when i touch the throttle the bike instantly dies

Things to note: i have gaps between the rubber boots and the air box

*bangs head against table*

I took apart fuel valve and cleaned it and put it back together...i noticed nothing get any cleaner, but i put it back on the bike and the bike started up.

bike runs fine now...but i dont know why and i dont know why it quit lol.

Something to add: when i turn off the bike smoke comes out of the right tail pipe for some time

i started up the bike, let it idle for a good 5 minutes it was running fine, i could blip the rpm up to 5-6k and it would also respond well.

Then i took it on the road within 600 ft the bike would start to die Whenever i pressed the throttle, it would only respond to light throttle turns and eventually it would not even respond well to that and it died.

I dont know why it died.

when i took apart the carbs after the float bowls were full of fuel

I have taken apart the carbs several times, but have not adjusted the bikes throttle synch since it seemed to be fine before when the bike was running fine. I dont think it would be that they got out of synch but what do those symptoms suggest?

Sounds like it's running out of fuel. Try a new vacuum line. If that does'nt help, replace the petcock diaphragm if possible, if not, get a replacement fuel valve.

yeah, your petcock is still causing trouble. If you were to hook a clear line to your drain plug and point it upwards you'd see the level drop when you opened the throttle. It's not supposed to go down enough to run out.

when i called two of my local parts stores both were unsure about ordering a pingle petcock for my bike, how should i go about finding the right one and ordering it?

how important are having hoses connected to the Vent T's of the carb? can they be left without hoses attached?

Pingel has a website, check it out and follow their instructions for the correct fuel valve/adapter. They have several styles. Mine was $90 including shipping. If your bike has pod filters, take the floatbowl vent lines off. If your bike has the stock airbox, the lines should stay on allthough it's not going to change how it runs if you don't put them back on.

Started up the bike, on the right side i hear a sound that kinda sounds like suction, or like a steam powered locamotive "chew-chew-chew" cant seem to locate if its in the carb or in the engine. Any ideas what it might be? i spray some liquid on the boots for the carb with no noticible change in the bike so dont think its an air leak but it might be.

Loose exhaust bolt(s)or gasket(s)?Be careful tightening the bolts, they can break easily. On my bike, correct torque is 8-9 ft/lb. Loosen bolts first, make sure threads are clean, re-torque all 8 bolts UNIFORMLY. If exhaust is leaking, then the gasket(s) are suspect.

Cam Chain Tensioner

well i tried the exhaust and does not seem to be coming from there, its either from a crack in the exhaust pipe itself, or i was thinking maybe it had something to do with my Cam Chain Tensioner.

How do these things work, how do i check if its properly adjusted. there is a spinning wheel on mine and i can twist it back with limited resistance from the spring attached to it, and it moves in and out while twisted. Any info?

you can use a length of hose held to your ear to pinpoint the noise.

Im noticing that my bike will change its idle, ill ussually have to blip the throttle for it to return to normal but sometimes it wont. it will vary about plus or minus 500 RPM at 1500 why does it do this ?
