Chucks Skunk #2 Project

Well as she stand right now, I am just waiting on the stuff from Larry. I sent him the front fork trim piece I bought for his restoration expertise. Soon as the stuff get back from Larry, I will throw the front end on and the engine will be set in the frame. The engine is all done with nice super shiney covers and all new gaskets. Clutch was inspected while the cover was off and I made sure the hub nut is secure. I have a wanted thread in the wanted parts section for a really nice stator cover emblem..thats the last needed thing far as i know.

Well today was the wammer jammer wrenching day. Frank Z. came over and we put the complete frt end on..forks, calipers, wheel, brake lines, headlight bucket, turn signals, Then we set the engine and bolted it in. Ran the wiring harness and plugged everything back in. Installed the carbs and throttle cables and lower airbox. Frank got a great education and Im sure he will chime in and tell you his perspective of the day.

That is a lot to get accomplished in one day.

How much did you have to pay Frank for the help?
Is he moving in now that you have room? :p

Daniel

Didnt pay him anything...he got the benefit of my experiene..to include seeing and learning how to polish the aluminum like a miiror ( we did a few learning patches on an old stator cover). And NO HE IS NOT MOVING IN!!!!!!!!!! Once bitten and lesson learned here.

+1... but i did snatch a key to your place just in case. :D

Had great time and learned A LOT for sure, Chuck. Like GS boot camp; knees, arse, and back sore as hell... Can't wait to do it again! Cool to reconnect with JBR at KPS too. Looking forward to having the 'motorcycle whisperer' take a look at the S. Dyno here we come! ;)

Skunk #2 should be purring soon. Gonna be a bewt, esp. with the new body work from Larry. Post some progress pics soon!

I was glad to have the help stuffing the engine back in..I usualy have to man handle them in and out alone. Hell you aint been thru "boot camp" yet. LMAO. So how did you like my tutorial on polishing and how absolutely simple of a system i use??

Shamelessly simple method there, Chuck... and great results to boot. Now the cat's out of the bag; you'll be in the polishing biz. I'll be bringing my covers up soon, and probably stay a few weeks... give or take. ;)

Been pretty busy the last few weeks. I got a bit more done this weekend. Gonna get the electrical all routed and nestled in its right spots tomorrow and get her fired up. Then its just the little stuff left. Polish the sprocket cover, install chain and guard, mirrors, etc etc.

Got her fired up today and checked the timing since i had that brain fart and turned the engine without the cam chain tensioner in place. All was good to go. Got the carbs synced and checked the charging. Its charging but I think I need to do some more cleaning on the connections. Now on the days off its button up the little stuff.

Sure is looking good Chuck! She has come a long way... Glad you got her fired up too!

Thanks guys..I expect the next few days and I will be ready to put the body work on. I will still have to calibrate the sending unit for the fuel guage once the tank is on. Hopefully that wont take too many times on and off to get it set right. Its a lot of stuff to do but at least now its whittled down to the small things and double checking all the bolts and being sure the cotter pins are all in.

Got all the connectors cleaned with a wire brush and put a smear of dielectric grease on each one. Got the chain and chain guard on also. I then started bleeding the brakes. I had just gotten to the end of the second front caliper when the handle on my mighty vac snapped. Next one is gonna be the better metal one. I was gonna put the front brake switch on, but soon realised I dont remember where i put the little spring and U shaped connector so they wouldnt get lost..Yeah that worked out well. Anyhow, tomorrow is another day.

Got me a nice all metal construction Mighty Vac today and finished the brakes. Cleaned and greased the speedo and tach cables and installed them. Put the big rubber handle bar cushion thing on and now am repainting the Suzuki emblem that goes in the center. Polished the mirrors and put them on too. Front fender installed. Looking more and more like a bike each day now.

I didnt have a lot of time today but did manage to calibrate the sending unit for the gas guage. Im getting good at this..only took me 5 times to get it to read right. I went to the gas station and got exactly 2.5 gallons in the can and tweeked the contact in there till it reads right on the 1/2 tank line . So the gas guage is pretty well reliable and accurate as is possible.

Well finally the day has come to report that other than the ignition cover and the right side heat shield she is all done. I didnt put the new tires on her yet either. But for all intensive purposes of reassembly and mechanicing the bike is completed. Still need the good seat cover too. Im not gonna put the seat grab rail on till i get the seat cover on. Hope she will be an awesome bike for whoever buys it when i sell it. Soon as i get the seat and the few minor details done I plan on listing her for sale. As for new rubber, I think whoever buys it can just put whatever tires of their choice on her. That way the new owner can have what they want as far as tires go. So what do you guys think of her??? Many kodos, by the way, to Nvr2old ( Larry Pearson ) for the paint work.

Oh and one other thing I just saw... the stator cover emblem Rustybronco sent is on the counter and I gotta repaint that..guess i have something to do Tuesday morning.

Fantastic looking bike Chuck. She's going be a beauty for someone that's for sure. You think she's going to be hard to put a price tag on?

I saw it was missing, just didn't get the time to ask if you hadn't received it for some reason or another. I assume the clutch lever worked okay?

sit tight on that grab rail. I might have something in the works.
