DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi guys,

I want to fit some classic flat track tyres and was looking at the Shinko 270. The only thing is I'm new to bikes and am currently only used to the whole 120/90 18 sort of numbers. When looking at these classic tyres I'm seeing 500 x 16. I assume the 16 is rim size? but what is the 500 relating to and what will fit my 1980 GS550L?

Thanks in advance!

It's usually written as "5.00", not "500", and it refers to the tire width in inches. If no aspect ratio is given, assume 90 or 100.

So, for example, a common old-school tire size is 5.10 X 17. This approximately equates to a 130/90-17 (5.10 inches equals 129.54 mm). (5.00X17, of course, would be a teensy bit narrower.)

Here's a conversion chart so you can get close -- the conversions aren't exact, of course, but you can get a general idea of what will fit. Stay as close as you can to stock sizes so handling is compromised as little as possible.

Another thing to mention is that tires designated in this way are very old designs that require tubes, even if mounted to tubeless rims.

If you plan to actually ride the bike, the idea of buying less capable tires based solely on their appearance seems very strange and silly to me and many others around here. Brace yourself for vigorous harrumphing...
