    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clutch basket grooving

Hi All, I have just pulled the clutch out of my 1980 GS1000G as it was slipping badly when cold and under power when hot which is bloody annoying when trying to overtake slower vehicles. Having read a couple of posts regarding clutch plates and the wearing the skinny Barnett plates can cause to the basket I thought I would check the state of my basket's primary and hub. I have found some minor wearing in the grooving that i would describe as 'it feels a bit like the surface of an orange skin'. I have attached a picture to show it. I also found the pivot nut to be very loose so i hope that has not caused any further issues.

My question is how bad does this have to be before it should be somehow cleaned up if it can be?

I don't think the condition of my basket is too bad but I am a newbie to this. This is my first time at pulling out a clutch hence why I have been searching the forums on clutch info. So thanks to all who have posted.
 
That amount of wear looks pretty normal. Nothing to worry about.

While the clutch is apart you might want to pick up an 1150 clutch hub nut and install it with some loctite so it doesn't loosen on you.

Your suggestion of a new 1150 Hub nut makes me think perhaps there is some thing special about this nut? Is there a reason why the origonal could not be used? I have so much to learn.....

1150 hub nut is wider or deeper or however you look at it. More threads, more bite, more accurate torque spread. You're not putting all that load on 4 threads..

The 1150 is nice, but for the big boys, use an APE hardened HD hubnut.. Bout $30 bucks i think? But, piece of mind...

And if you bang on your gear box...row row your boat.. Get a HD backing plate kit for your clutch basket and have it installed
 
Fantasic. Now i know. I will have to look for an Australian supplier or get one from over there in the US somewhere. I will also reseach the backing plate kit you speak of. Thanks gentlemen for sharing your knowledge.

Mine was much worse so I went after it with a file and reinstalled it with a set of new fiber plates. Seems to be working fine.
