    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clutch pinion oil seal revisited

I took the clutch cover off my '83 1100GL to buff it up some. I want to replace the seeping oil seal on the pinion shaft as per this thread. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=157969

I can't figure out how to get the seal out. It doesn't want to come out the top and the unit is kind of sealed although the Alpha Sports parts fiche shows a bunch of parts in there. Each end of the shaft has a little hole that seems to have some fine threads. Maybe it is pressed in and you need some kind of little puller? Anybody ever deal with this? Here are a couple of pics from different angles.

It comes out the top. Remove the arm you still have there on the end of the shaft & use a sheet metal screw into the seal to pull the seal out with a pair of vise grips. Ray.
 
Thanks Ray, Will try that. I just left the arm on to have something to grab when pulling the cover off. Jim M
 
Wow, it's tight in there. On this seal and shaft there is only about 1/16" of space in there. I guess I need to try to find a really tiny sheet metal screw. Would a dental pick type thing work or would that just tear the seal up?
 
I use a long skinny punch against the bottom of the shaft (as seen in pic #2) and a hammer to drive the shaft out, along with the seal, washer, and bearing.

Be very careful about how you secure the clutch cover, and make sure you don't ding the edges where the gasket goes too much.

This seal is very thick (top to bottom), so I've never had any luck pulling it out.
 
Yeah, I managed to get a screw and a hook I fashioned out of a finishing nail under the lip of the metal core of the seal but I couldn't get it out. I was wondering if that hole about 2/3 of the way up the shaft (2nd pic) was Suzuki's access for some kind of offset punch to drive the assembly out without driving the shaft out. I've got a couple of seals but no bearing. Is it likely I can reuse the bearing?
 
Use a punch if it's that stuck in there. Have someone help you hold the cover while you tap on the bottom of the shaft with the punch. Put a towel under the cover so you don't scratch it up. If you don't have anyone to help hold the cover, screw 2 blocks of wood to your bench with a gap between them for the shaft to stick through & then you will be able to tap it out with the blocks acting as a stop. Ray.
 
Thanks Bryan and Ray. The mechanic at work helped me drive the shaft up and we put in the new seal. We apparently we didn't drive the bearing down quite as far as it was before because there is about 3/32 play up and down in the shaft. There was maybe 1/32 play before. Hopefully, this is okay. I have another seal in case I need to redo it. It's no problem now after you guys helped me. Thanks Jim M
