    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I think my clutch seal may be leaking. Whats the best way to remove it? I do not see a snap ring, is it a press fit?

Need to know the bike, please. If you put it in your signature we would not have to ask every time. (See mine?)
What is a clutch seal? Does your clutch cable go into the sprocket cover? Is it the seal around the rod that spans the width of the engine?
Again, if your bike was in your signature (User CP, top left menu item) I could have answered your question directly.

The 80 850 models have the clutch actuation arm directly on top of the clutch cover, so I am at a loss as to what a clutch seal could be. There is a seal where the actuation arm goes into the clutch cover, and there is a gasket between the clutch cover and the engine cases. mvalenti?
 
Yes, there's a seal around that actuation arm. There's no snap ring -- it's just held in by friction.

The seal is surprisingly deep (get a new one to see what I mean). I've replaced these before by driving the actuating arm (along with the bearing and the seal) out with a long, thin punch from the bottom of the clutch cover. You need to be very careful not to damage the clutch cover.

You don't need to drive the shaft and bearing out all the way -- in fact, you can stop when you've got it just far enough to grab the seal and yoink it out.

To replace, tap the bearing and shaft back into place with a socket, then grease and install the seal using the socket.

And yes, please put the model details of your bike in your signature. There's a lot of variety in the GS lineup...


Some people have removed this seal from the top without removing the shaft. You can't extract the seal with a screw through the face as you can with other seals, so you end up needing to chisel the seal body out of the bore. To me, this sounds like a great way to damage the shaft and bore, but do as thou wilt...

thanks guys, it turned out that it wasnt leaking there..it was at the case/cover right next to it. I installed new gaskets a few weeks back. They seemed to have swelled a bit and now all is good. I did find another leak at the top of the oil pressure switch, wasnt seated all the way..
