A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

come on mac (or seller)

so there shouldnt be a spacer or anything at all to help support the headers? i know the muffler bolts on the bike but jeez seems a bit sketchy like it wouldn't stay still

Did you look at the pictures in post #4. That's how they should look when installed properly. Look at how straight the flanges are. Don't over tighten the bolts (or stud nuts). If you over tighten them, they will bend in like a half moon.

Dude... Everything you posted in post#17 looks correct. The stock bolts are about 1/4" too short to be secure enough. Go get some decent stainless bolts, and washers. Bring an old one with you, and just ask for the same bolt, but stainless, and 1/4" longer. The rear mount holds the weight of the baffle side. You are really just WAY over thinking this...

Really?? Take another look. You have a decent-size bolt holding up the muffler and EIGHT bolts holding up the front end. Exactly what do you think is going to move?

You have fewer bolts holding the wheels to the forks.

There is supposed to be a lip on the end of the pipe that rests against the gasket. Taking off half an inch will remove that lip and he will have more problems than he thinks he has now.

One of the wonderful things about the WRITTEN language is that the reader can only see what is on the page. Can't hear the change in the voice, can't see the twinkle in the eye, NOTHING. Just what is written on the page.

If you want to be a sarcastic anal orifice, at least put "jk" in there (or whatever is popular today for 'just kidding') so the reader knows you are just jerking their chain.

Some of us, who have been riding and working on motorcycles for several decades, and who have seen many of your posts over the years, might have picked up on that. However, this is a new member that just joined a couple of months ago and has not had the pleasure of seeing your posts. Through other coversations with him, I happen to know that he is very young and this is his first bike, so he simply does not know any better, and will likely take what he sees as gospel and will cut off the pipes.

You mean face to face communication is better than electronic? Who'd a thunk? (Nobody under 30.)

all good ive already thought about doing that then realised how bad of an idea that would be especially if i cut them unevenly, but yeah new audience i dont have enough knowledge to not be gullible at a suggestion. atleast steve is honest and said id have more problems than i think i do, i probably am over my head thinking what is wrong with my bike when theres not much at all just basically periodical maintenance and a few new installations, just a first timer right now.

how i wish these online conversations could be as good as speaking in the flesh, its probably the same reason i dont feel as confident about certain things (with my bike ofcourse)

update: its on, refit it a second time because at first i thought i installed the bolts unevenly leaving the flanges in a stressed position, nope, just macs finish. where the flanges are held there is sanded paint or something leaving it silver, but its uneven how its finished, so it looks weird. really screwed with me at first but everything on well, and the muffler mount almost even fit perfectly onto where the passenger footpegs are, but it was less than half an inch shorter then where the mounting hole is at for the footpegs, just put a ziptie on there its already very stable without it.

I would ALWAYS go to studs if taking bolts out. A screwed up bolt hole is a real possibility after a few off & ons. Studs I can just break loose & retighten once every few years so the don't get frozen up in there

sorry sorry i know i shouldve used washers i didnt think of it at the time noobie mistake. fits well and very stable, and looks great in my opinion.

That zip tie's not gonna last. Bolt it up.

if it sits there already like that do you think itd be fine? without the ziptie its basically the same spot i just put it there for reassurance, dont think i can make a mounting bracket for it as the hole for the muffler mount is shorter than the footpeg mount so the mounts are blocking eachother. so close to perfect fit.

or what could i do in my situation? dont know if id wanna drill holes in anything even the mount, maybe if i need to.

I can't see how far the hole in the muffler bracket is from lining up to the rear peg mount hole. But I'd probably try to elongate the hole in the muffler bracket (make the hole an oval) if that bracket has enough meat to do that.
or
have someone weld a tab with a hole onto that muffler bracket to line up with the hole in the rear peg mount. That could be painted black so as to mostly disappear. Got a friend w/ a welder?

Otherwise, a few wraps of safety wire will get you a lot more mileage that a tiny little plastic zip tie.

+1, hard to tell but looks like 10 minutes with a round file and you'd be there.

if you loosen up the clamp that secures the rear muffler to the linkpipe, does that give you the chance to wiggle the pipe so the holes line up ?
Usually you make sure the muffler lines up, then you tighten that clamp.
Make sure the muffler grabs on to enough of the link pipe to get a good clamping.

no i just fit it all the way in to ensure its fully on, will it react any different fully pressed in or just a little gap between?

Not being there looking at it, just by the pictures, it does look like if the muffler went appx. 1/2" farther up on the header, the hole should line up. It may take a little twisting & pushing, that's normal, but it looks too close not to be able to make it fit.
