    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Compatible WIRE SPOKE Wheels 1978 GS1000 Skunk

I have a GS1000 skunk that I want spoked wheels on. The catch is getting dual-discs up front to match the stock calipers and forks.

I've found a few candidates. Is it correct that a GT750, GS750, GS400, and GS550 should be drilled and tapped on both sides and interchangeable?

What other options are there? I reeeeeally need this to work and since I'm buying online, I have to be sure because I can't measure them and compare them in person.

Rear wheel as well? I can re-lace hoops and spokes to my liking.
 
They'll work on the front (but I don't know about the 400) and there's no need to drill and tap for the other disc - the threads are already there.

Same for the back but you'll rule out the wheels with drum brakes obviously and you'll have to swap bearings depending on which wheel you use.

GS1000 wire wheels will, of course, also work.
 
OK I've found a GT750 water buffalo front hub for sale for a decent price. Now the rear is proving to be the challenge, what with the GS1000 being ahead of its time and having all discs! Is there a common source for parts like that? Searching locally and online has turned up nothing for sale!!

As far as I can find, only the GS1000 and GS750 had wire/disc combo on the rear.
 
GS1000 spoked wheels are tapped on both sides, just covered by a plastic cover. They have nice aluminum rims too, a lot lighter than the steel ones on the 750s and 550s.

I have them on my 550, nice wheels.
 
I myself love aluminum wheels but this will go to somebody else and chrome is easier to maintain... Maybe I'll consider some modern MX hoops, which seem to be very easy to keep looking great.
 
I would trade my wheels but everyone seems to like the way the spoked ones look, on my 1000. They are lighter, too, so I guess I'll keep them.
 
Have you tried putting a 'parts wanted' ad up on the site for a set of spoked rims?
 
I guess now that I know that GT750, GS750 and GS550 wheels will work I can :)
 
OK I've hit a new impediment. Is the sprocket carrier from the mag setup compatible with the spoke hub without modification? Would I need to shave spacers, add spacers, different bearings etc??? I have a member that wants to send me a hub but doesn't know if I'll need his carrier or if I can use my own.

When you're looking for parts compatibility a good resource is to go to a site like AlphaSports (link below) and look up the models of bikes you need the info for and see if the part numbers match. I didn't look at the '78 but I did look at '79 and the hub and spacer numbers for the wire wheel and cast wheel model are the same. Should be the case for the '78s also.

Not sure about the 1000 but on the 750 they are different. I had to mill some material off the carrier to fit the alloy when going from spokes to alloys.
 
Looks like they used that sprocket carrier for plenty of years.....
