    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Crank welding needed with big bore kit?

If you are going to redline the engine much or put sticky tires on it or start modifying it at ALL, I would weld it. It is VERY cheap insurance. BUT..... it is your bike & your money. Ray.

so why Did pop yoshirmira recomend them not to be welded as it can make the metal brittle
two differant crank rebuilders tell me the samething I could under stand it for drag or racing
but for just a wiseco 1085cc with stock cams ridden on the road.
 
I don't know why anyone said what they said TWENTY + years ago but I know what works NOW & what can happen if these things aren't prepped correctly for what we do with them. Do whatever you want, it's your bike but when I build one for a customer & they don't want to weld the crank or do CERTAIN things for longevity, they get NO waranty! Ray.

Why don't you call the people who do this for a living? Two very good sources were given. Then you hear it right from the person doing the work.

Hey ONE POST, no one is talking to you! LOL!! Yes you get a warranty! Of COURSE you do! After all, it IS a DRAGBIKE motor! We put the motor in the back of your truck & it's 2 minutes or 2 blocks, you choose! LOL!!! Honestly though, I stand behind ALL of my motors & I will be there when you fire it up the first time & I'll be at the track for it's first passes! Ray.
 
Are the plane tickets included in the price of the motors you assemble then? LOL

With the things that can happen on a race bike, it would seem pretty tough to warrant your work without seeing exactly how the bike was put together and ran. You can't be in control of things like the chain, fuel type, amount of oil used...... See below.....

This is the crank from motor 2 showing one of John's full welds. It was a big end, virgin. I won't buy someone else's welded crank because you never know what material the welder used, how the metal was heated..........

Plug reading 101, who gives a sht about the color?? Sure do read a lot about it on the net. LOL. Look at the heat line! Exploded motors on left that were jetted to .120 on MACH 118NOS, changing to VP C16 on right with smaller jets. Can this really be?!

Maybe to clear that last picture up.... That's not 4 and 4, i.e. 2 sets of plugs. The far left was from the first motor that cut loose. After that each plug is from a different jetting. You can see the big switch when I changed fuels. Towards the right, the jetting is fixed but the boost is increasing. More boost = more power = requires more fuel = needs bigger jets (but they are fixed, so motor runs leaner), leaner is hotter, hotter pushes heat line up. Heat line depends on the plug brand, plateing..... With the NGK D9EA I try and keep it to 1 1/2 threads.

One word of advice on plug reading.... Even thought I show only one plug / run in this picture. NEVER BE LAZY AND CHECK JUST ONE PLUG OVER AND OVER AGAIN!! Even if you have had all 4 out for the last 4 runs and they are all tracking, if your making changes you need to keep checking. If not the gods of spark will surely cause cylinder 3 to lean out while your looking at 4 and your motor will send up a smoke screen.... I am talking from my own experience!!

It's ok Mark, Doug Schumann is a friend of mine & lives within 100 miles.LOL! HOLY CRAP Mark! You turbo guys go fast but when you tear stuff up you REALLY kill it GOOD! LOL! Even on ALL of the stuff I do I check the plugs RELIGIOUSLY & I'm only doing naturally aspirated stuff. If you need any cranks for cores to send out let me know. Ray.

Thanks for the advice Guys, but I have one big problem.
I live in Norfolk England ,trying to get anything done is nearly in possible .
we havent got a decent bikeshop around here I took Gs to be MOTd the workshop foremen
says to me "never seen one of them before this was a suzuki main Dealer".
took it to 6 differant shops to get a base gasket fitted none of them wanted to now all they
want is to service mopeds& scooters because they can be done quicker (money).
Enderd up doing it my self nothing of a to big problem.
me next prob is where to get it welded up .send it to a tuning shop they send it away and
charge me double what they pay ?600.00 is what ive been told.its a lot of money.

So what exactly bends them? Poor speedshifting technique? Extreme revs? Clutch snapping attempts at burnouts and wheelies?
Does anybody know?
I'm not taking apart a perfectly good low mileage motor unless I need to.
Stock engine at reduced power due to the high elevation around here.
Not drag racing. No fat tires and burnouts.
Not even running it very hard other than long full throttle blasts up the mountain highways around here.

Any need to weld?

I know a guy in Glasgow that does serious modifications on the old Suzukis, I can give him your email address if it would help.

Find an automotive engine shop that builds RACING engines & they will be able to help you & will be CHEAPER then a motorcycle shop. Ray.

yeah he has just pm me back to tell me he has one allready welded up depends how much
he is a Drag racer in pro mod.
 
RapidRay, who do you recommend in So Cal? I have a oil leak at the front of head gasket, that is leaking enough to have it replace but engine does run strong.

I am 3 blocks from Disneyland, where are you? Also, which bike has the leak? Ray.
 
My 83 GS1100E has the leak...and I'm in Irvine, 15 min from Disneyland
