Cylinder head torque for the different nuts ?

ukjules

Forum Sage
A quick one:
I am looking in my suzuki works manual (not haynes) looking for the torque
on the Cylinder head nuts. 4 exterior most and 8 internal most ones.

Value say: 2.3 - 2.7 kg/m

My bike a gs550et 1980.

Question:
Is the torque stated the same for all 12 cylinder head nuts ?
namely 2.3- 2.7 kg/m ?

I ask as the four external most nuts with copper washers anr bigger than
the internal 8 nuts ?

do you guys use the same torque ?

Answer - they are the same.

I need shims to finish off the head rebuild:

I want 2 down from 2.15 - ie. 2.10 and 2.05 to be sure.
oddly all the others are 2.5 - 2.7, there is always one but i have never
needed one that low.

Anyone help ?
I can swap some if you want too ?

I am in the UK

2.15 is the thinnest you can get. You'll need to machine off the tips of the valves where you have clearance issues (the procedure and measurements are laid out in the manual). Alternatively, you might get lucky if you swap the buckets around as some are thinner than others.

This is turning into a nightmare. 1 valve had to have this issue.
Im gonna run it as is and take a chance. All the other valve clearance are now spot on within limits.

I need to ride this thing.
Ill do a start up and check again when tighten the head.

Either the bike works now - or I will bin it.
I am not taking it apart now.

Have you measured the clearances as per the factory manual?

Running the thing with no valve clearance is only going to end one way.

I have done everything correctly ! via the workshop manual.
All the other valves are between 0.3 and 0.8.

the one valve that is ruining everything I cannot get a 0.003mm gauge into it.
I think (yes think) the shim is 2.15. I cannot make it out on the shim and measured it with gauge.
I reckon it is 2.15.

All the other ones are between 2.55 and 2.7.

I need a thinner shim ( but i am on the smallest already)
I would like a 2.15 just to be sure.
of course it is one i dont have.

Something sounds wrong or did you really go to town when you ground in that one valve? If you just think that shim is 2.15 try swapping it with one of your other thin ones which you know is correctly measured. Or like I suggested earlier, try the bucket swap - that's pretty quick to do.

I dont have and never had any shims below 2.5.
I have never used this 2.15 befoire - i cant tell what it is but with my
guage it looks to be a 2.15.

I agree i want a 2.15 !! to test but i dont have one.

Swapping buckets about is a lot of work again. off with the cams, chain tensioner ......

i really have had it with this bike. id say 60-70 hours plus on this and this just a head rebuild.

Gap 0.4 0.3 0.3 too tight for 0.003
EX Cy 1 2 3 4
Shim 2.55 2.5 2.55 2.15 i think

Gap 0.4 0.5 0.6 0.7
IN Cy 1 2 3 4
Shim 2.7 2.6 2.55 2.7

If you just want a 2.15 to test try your local Suzuki dealer. My local one still has a set kicking around the workshop and don't bother to charge for them if the right mechanic is in that day.

Just rang my Engineering co, and they can reduce size of shims.
They of course said they can do it to an extent - of course.

I will make them cut 2 of my spares to 2.10 and 2.05.

they also told me that I should "always" check the valve clearances on the bench !
That seemed a good idea in principal until I though how on earth could i turn the cams
with just the head on the bench ?
Is there a way to check all the valve clearances with the head on the bench - so
i dont get into this situation again ?
