DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Damaged transmission gear bearing

So this is the second time I've tried to get a transmission for my 450 off of eBay. First time, covered in rust spots (got my money back of course). This time, seems ok, except the first gear on the output shaft (which just slides off) was dinged while either being stored or shipped off of the shaft. The bearing material is dented and pushed up at the end of the oil distribution channel. Do folks think this is reparable, or should I try yet again?

It's repairable.

Even though unlikely, your best bet would be to try and find someone with a bearing scraper to remove the damaged spot. Not having access to one of those, you could carefully file off the damage with a round file and polish the area with wet/dry sandpaper or a piece of crocus cloth; checking it for proper fit as you go along.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a transmission now. My philosophy is if a part is questionable, I would rather replace it now while the cases are split than have to go back in once the motor is assembled. If a new gear is available, I'd replace it. I had a damaged 3rd gear but after careful inspection, I ended up replacing 2nd and 5th also.Since one of the shift forks was also broken, I am installing all new forks, drum, and most of the shifter hardware. It may be possible to press that bushing out and replace it.You would have to see if one is available.

You can repair this, but it is important to touch as little of the bearing surface as possible. Use a needle file (google it if you do not know what one is) to remove any material protuding into the oil channel, or that might snag on the shaft. Again, be careful not to alter any more of the bearing surface than you need to. The idea here to simply to remove any protuding material, and leave the rest of the bearing to do its job.

Sanding will not be needed.
