If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

To a different drummer...

To a different drummer...

Spent about a hour tonight removing the last of the case corrosion. Don't think I can get them any cleaner short of soda blasting them

Made some cardboard masking panels tonight. Tomorrow after work I'll give the cases a good degreasing, a final etch with phosphoric acid and start masking the cases in preparation for paint.

Picked up a licence plate over the weekend. Not in too bad a shape for the $5 l paid for it.
The wife thought I bought it to hang on the licence plate ladder.

Not one spot of corrosion or oil left.

(90% of it was done by hand)

Wow Dale, those cases look spotless! Nice work! Don't want to know how many hours you have into getting them that way. You are motivating me to get busy on my engine cases, only I don't have your energy level...

Enjoying the thread.:) Keep going...

Ed, I don't want to know how many hours I have in them. All I can say is a lot. Every time I turned around I found another spot or two that needed a little more finessing. I gave up and said when they're done to my satisfaction, I'll start taping them. It's sure nice when you can see all the numbers near the bolt locations and they're as crisp as the the day they were cast.

I feel so ashamed that I use the blast cabinet. I just dont have that much give-a-damn to do it by hand.

Could have just dumped a can of black paint on the entire bike without even washing it and it would have looked like new as compared to how I got it!! HA HA.

Cant wait to see it with my own two eyes when shes done.

Doing my best painter impression...

Three to four hours taping the cases. Degreasing in process.

Sufficient lighting in place this time.

Hi Dale,
I have missed most of this and managed to have a quick look around again. What I have seen is that everything you have touched is better than new now! Be careful or they will sign you up for a reality TV show soon!
Very, very nice!

Thanks for the kind words Andre, but I'd run if anyone mentioned doing this for a reality show. More than likely they wouldn't allow you to have this sort of fun!

In colour now. Ended up with small run in the lower engine case which most of was removed with a piece of green tape. When the paint flashes I'll dust it lightly and it should be just fine.

Chuck, I'm finally starting to realize that it just might be.

When I first looked at the paint last night I thought it was going to be, at least in my minds eye, a little too brilliant.
When I mixed the paint up this afternoon, the colour took on more of a gray cast which is what I really was hoping for. I would like to also make note that this paint is a very high solids paint. You will be shaking and sturring it up for a good ten minutes to get all the material to properly mix.

In all it's high rez glory.

Looks fantastic Dale. The Eastwood paint seems to be an amazing match to the OEM paint. Awesome!:D

Does this paint require then progressively longer and longer heat cycles to be considered fully cured? If so, are you gonna bake it prior to reassembly? This, if it can be pulled off, would be the best way to bake them and ensure that the rear and lower parts of the cases are good. The jugs, obviously, will be heated very very readily. Thing is to cure it in progressively longer heat exposure to prevent bubbling and ensure a good positive bonding.

Ed, I think it's slightly less brilliant than the factory paint was. Not much less, very close. I really think you would have a hard time finding an off the shelf paint that would match as close.

Chuck, this particular paint was mixed with a catalyst and is rated to 650?. You shoot it, let it cure for XX amount of days and you should be good to go.
It's supposed to be fuel resistant as well. Between fuel resistance and the colour match I don't think it can get any better.

Holy....

And it probably looks even better in the daylight! Great work, Dale!

So, what is the paint that you ended up using?
