A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

De-stinking Penelope

Sci... I shall keep them coming! That's the easiest part of the whole project.

Take a magnet and run it around the oil pan when you take it off then wipe it on a paper towel. The towel will absorb the oil ad disipate it and leave any shavings or small bits readilt visible..let it sit maybe 10 minutes and then relook to see whats on the surface. Maybe also in any crevaces that are holding oil in the lower end.

Chuck, The closest thing to it is the clutch basket. Maybe sometime in its neglected past, it grenaded? who knows at this point. I'm draining the oil so I can flip it over and hope the case bolts aren't going to give me fits. As rusted as they look I can only pray they don't.

I have acess to 4 1000 engines..I know youll use due diligance and be as easy as possible..BUT in "case"..( again a cheap pun) I got you ( double pun ) covered.

And Ive been going over the internals in my head and the clutch basket is my most likely suspect as well. Youll know soon enough.

I pulled both side covers, drained the oil by tipping the engine and letting the oil run out the clutch side. I'm 100% positive the starter clutch is bad. It clunks, locks up when you turn it and has a side to side wobble. She's junk!

Yup...she sounded bad when we cranked her a bit...wasnt sure if it was maybe loose bolts or even a broke one...bet that was the biggest reason it was pushed aside. Guys probably had no clue what it was or how to fix. probably thought the sound was a broke crank and just shoved it to the barn and abandoned it.

Chuck and I were just discussing how difficult a project this was to take on. I though I would post a picture of what I started working with. She's truly a diamond in the rough! Heavy on the rough...

Show that one in my garage with the pigeon crap stil on the tank. I was truly surprised the cahin even bent to roll around the sprockets

How about a picture showing how deep the wheels were buried in 'manure'. There's no saving that rim.

That's one sad looking starting point, but the right guy is on the job. Pete's 450 was pretty rough when he started too, but he's got a jewel now.

Amazing stuff for sure SV.

That rim just looks well preserved. Needs a little excavation though.

Ed, I was just thinking the exact same thing. I wonder who's bike was rougher, Petes or mine. I think this one's condition has His beat by a mile. :(

I think we're running neck and neck on who's persevering the most. His build has been one of the Inspirations to get this project done properly. He's good peoples AND a scotch lover I might add. :)

Awww shucks I'm blushing here! Hahaha

Nah seriously, Dale yours takes the cake with the roughness for sure, mine was neglected by yours truly, not buried in who knows what like yours!

Glad I've inspired you though, it's good to see my 450 has done more than just given me lots of pleasure :D

And Ed, cheers for the compliment, it is very greatly appreciated!

Dale.. That showshow long it sat in the crap, but the other one of the tank still with the droppings on it is still my favorite picture of it. If that bike could talk she would say I love you each time she sees thatb gargae door opening. All excited like Morgan gets!!!

It'll buff right out Dale :p

And someone did an awesome job of routing that wiring...
