De-stinking Penelope

I felt that pain right over on this side
I think you will feel much better once you have it all apart and the damage assessed.
Good luck from this side!

Dale..red Xs here too..whats the scoop on pics???
Sometimes links don't like to imbed in a posting properly. I've up loaded them to imageshack for you.

I don't need the crank just yet, I need to finish splitting the cases and check all the internals. That cap screw for the starter clutch had to end up somewhere and no telling what path it took or what else may have gotten hammered. When it's apart and any damaged assessed we'll definitely be talking.

My project took a turn for the worse...

Needs a crankshaft and possibly more after I split the cases.

Ok, edumacate me please Dale... to my completely ignorant eyes it simply looks like there's a buggered bearing sitting on top of the starter clutch, but I realise there's something more to it...

I didn't need to pull my starter clutch off so have no idea what it's supposed to look like, and I don't know how similar it is to the 4 cylinders...

Pete, What you looking at is a bearing that had destroyed it's self and in the process of 'grenading' has also destroyed the proper surface finish a bearing requires to ride on. Basically the surface is galled. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galling

Yours has the same style starter clutch.

Is the crank case hardened or not? If not, I would go over to a local bearing house and find an oversized one that will fit the ID of the clutch and just have the od of the crank lathed to accept the new bearing. But if its a case hardened arrangement your up chits creek. By OVERSIZED i mean thicker rollers in the bearing itself..like maybe 1.2 MM or so. That area of the crank is plenty thick enough to accept some lathe work. I dont Know if PEZCO in Madison Hgts is still in business but if they arent you cann take it to ABC (?) over there too. think about it and I can work my sources for you.

Chuck, with the markings on the crank, I rather put a crank in it.

Let me inspect the rest of the engine and see what I need, then you can work your sources and let me know if they have and how much $$$. With the play in the trans, I might be better off buying the complete lower half.

It's all speculation at this point.

let me know...worse comes to worse I will ship you that spare engine I had thats over at Randys.

Pete, Obviously this Bike has led a hard life.

There's a mounting boss for the chain cover that's been broken off, which more than likely, was caused by a chain that had proper maintenance it's whole life ;)

The damage done to the crank both internally and on the 'snout' of it would lead one to worry about the rest of the engine internals. Thankfully the cam journals show no damage and that leads me to believe the bike has at least had oil in it most of it's life. I don't know if that's enough to be thankful about, but it's a step in the right direction.

Yes it certainly looks like it had a hard life!

Considering most of these GS engines are basically bullet proof someone had to do something awfully wrong to get that sort of result...

Two of the frictions from when I dis-assembled the clutch basket last night. Found most of the missing pieces.

Not much done today other than washing up parts that were removed. I'll get back on it tomorrow and split the cases.

I know..just that had I had a way to know all the history or other things I surely would have never called him that fateful day. Too bad whoever had it before had grenaded everything. Soon as he has a list for me I will be crating up the parts and getting them shipped.

Chuck, I've repeatedly said I've enjoyed this from the day I got it and that hasn't changed one Iota. There isn't one thing I've not been able to do to bring her back from the dead, nor will there be. The only thing at this point, is which avenue is more feasible, repair or replacement. It's no different than choosing what shade of gloss to paint the hand controls.

To me, this is relaxation.

Cases are split, but I've got a 'lot' of cleaning, inspecting and measuring of components before I'll have an idea if repair Vs. replacement is best. Right off hand as it looks so far, a crank is all it's going to need. The trans gears look good, the bearings feel smooth and other than all the corrosion on the outer case halves, every thing looks good at a cursory glance. Even the dogs look good!

I found the last piece from the clutch friction disc. :)

I'd hate to see the condition of the engine if this was a plain bearing motor. Thank God for roller bearings!

Your gonna be fine from what i can actually "see". All that friction grit will wash right out. I am running down to Frank Zs today and will check in from time to time. I have tomorrow off and will be able to fetch parts then...let me know soon as you do...

Since shes all open, i am assuming a NEW cam chain will be going in?? How did the chain guides look?
