dented carb floats

So... I'm working on a recently acquired GT750 Water Buffalo. While cleaning the carbs, the floats to be more accurate, I was a bit too strong in my cleaning. I ended up denting a few of the floats. I don't know my own strength I guess.

And even though I tried several searches, I couldn't really find an answer to my questions. Which are:

Is there any way to repair these dented carb floats? They're not crushed flat but they have been dented some.

I assume I can't still use them? Since they're dented, I'm guessing the air volume will now be incorrect and not usable?

Thanks for any help and please pardon my stupidity.

Super

I read somewhere years ago that if you drop them into boiling water the dents will pop out...Never tried it but it seems logical as the air pressure inside would rise and the heat would soften the brass slightly too.

Worth a try anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

My first thought was that even though they were dented, the inside air volume should remain the same. But I'm just don't know for certain if the change in the outside size of the floats would effect the float height.

My second thought was to try and raise the inside temp of the floats to expand them to push the dents out. I thought to maybe put them in the oven. BUT.. I know that I can't compromise the solder of the floats and that heating them too much may do this. And I don't know what temp would melt the solder.

Still not sure what to do.

Ok, thanks Chuck. That's good to know. I think I'll give it a try.

Boiling water sounds like a good trick, if they're dented then don't use them, your fuel level will change and that means the mixture will be affected.

Thanks. I was wondering if that may be the case.

I'm still hoping someone that has been through something like this might still jump in and give their experienced advice.

Man, I've seen on more than one occasion, guys cut off the entire "pontoon" off of a double lobed float and the still have the bike run like balls. It appeared to make no difference what-so-ever.

I can't imagine a couple dents are gonna make any discernible difference at all.

The dents will make it foat lower. Adjust th float hieght again, it's fine. Didn't the boiling work?

On the same line, couldnt someone cut the brass ones off and replace them with round poly ones from some old VM carbs? Thing would be whats a fuel proof adhesive to put them on with.

Floats

Floats

I personally think that it would have to depend where the dent or dents are located. Is the float deformed, so much as to prevent smooth operation action??? If not deformed, I would just use the 4 modified drain bolt with tubing method to set the correct level and go from there.

Being dented should not change the way the float works. Unless there is a hole in them the internally air volume will not have changed and the weight of the float is still the same. As long as they float and are not being interfered with use them. I have used dented floats before without problems. If they have a hole in them , then it is a different story.

Being dented doesn't change the weight of the float or the amount of air in the float.

Like a boat, the float displaces an amount of fuel so that the weight of the displaced fuel is the same as the float weight.

As tkent02 said, a dented float sits lower in the fuel. This causes the fuel level to be higher & the bike to run very rich.

Suzuki issued a two-stroke service bulletin about dented floats when these bikes were in production.
They said that dented floats can result in piston seizures.

NOS floats are still available from Suzuki. They are pricey but are also really cheap when compared to the price of a new top end.

The float level adjustment technique that habsdoc mentioned might work out ok.
Absent that, you should replace the floats.

Hey guys, sorry for not getting back to the forum yesterday. Got hung up on a few things.

The boiling didn't work. But it did smell a bit nasty and that was fun.

Jabcb, sounds like you're familiar with these bikes. I tried every word combination possible on the Suzuki 2 Stroke forum but couldn't find anything so I thought I would try asking here. I was afraid that the shape, or mis-shape, of the floats, would effect float height. I will check out the bulletins you mentioned.

here is a pic of one of the offenders before cleaning:

I'll try and get some pics of the damaged floats loaded up to this thread later today.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Ok, here's a pic of one of the dented floats. This is pretty much the average size of the dents.

One set of floats has one dented side on one of the floats, the second set has one dented side on both floats and the third is fine. I caught myself before I dented it.

Hopefully this will clear up my dilemma.
