A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.
A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.
Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.
Is the vacuum hose connected from the petcock to the left carb?
What is this brass nipple for?
![]()
It is the general consensus that when you go to pods you leave the hose off, just like in the picture. To be honest, I do not know the reason for this rationale. Perhaps one of our resident carb experts can chime in?By fuel tap, I'm referring to the petcock... I don't use the word petcock as over here that would mean a tame rooster
And there will definitely be an equivalent overflow nipple on the right carb, but it is *inside*, not outside. From the factory there were hoses on each that direct down the frame tube so overflow would drain on to the road like the battery overflow tube.
As to the one side not firing.
SIMPLY spray starting fluid onto the bad side, onto the pod filter while running.
if it picks up and runs, there is a restriction inside the carb.
If it does not run, there is something amiss either spark/spark timing/ or engine mechanical.
I use starting fluid as a diagnostic tool. You should NEVER use it on a regular basis.
True, there is an accelerator pump, but it is external to the bowl, and the carbs are completely different.i think the bowls for th 450 automatic are different because of the one side has an accelerator pump? maybe someone has done some bad parts replacing...
ok here a pic on EBAY auction for PRE 83 GS450 carbs and it looks like you have one of those float bowls instead of the correct, GS400 bowl!!!
There aren't currently any auctions for GS400s that i see but since yours runs on the one that has the channels, then you have the wrong other one...
They may all be "BS34 Mikuni", but they are not all BS34SS Mikuni.from the Clymer manual...it says "they are all BS34 Mikuni"...
I have seen this on mine before.
I know too high oil level will do it.
If one cylinder is too rich or lean it will do that too.
Or if they are way out of synch.
I cured mine with a carb rebuild and swapping pistons left to right.
Can you do a video with a low idle ?
Srart spray will wash the cylinder of oil so use it sparingly.
Do you have any pics of the botton of your carbs?
