    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok so I got the carbs off my GS850G and it makes me cry looking at some of the pics that you guys post because my bike is DIRTY!!!! Here are some (nor so terribly great at showing the external dirt) pics!

I spent about an hour cleaning each this afternoon. There's no way I could put those in a chem dip while that dirty. I'll prob clean them in my parts washer first just to see if there's anything else I can clean off before I tear them apart.

I'll post some pics of what they look like after a preliminary cleaning tomorrow.

Hey nothing makes a better before/after than some dramatic before pics! Looking forward to the after!
 
Ha ha....those look like mine before I cleaned them. I've cleaned mine a couple times already and are still nowhere close to some of the immaculately clean engines I've seen out here. I could eat off of some of these guys engines, but they'd probably get made at me putting food on them.
 
Please take them apart BEFORE they go into your parts washer.

If you're absolutely CERTAIN that the solvent is completely friendly to rubber and plastic, then never mind.

But attacking assembled carbs with various cleaning potions is an excellent way to ruin those oh-so-delicate and incredibly expensive thin rubber slide diaphragms.

Thanks for the tip. I was planning on it, because it's Diesel that is in the parts washer... so friendly... not really! lmao

I took the bowls off and the pilot jet plugs are just like brand new so I have to cancel my order from flatout since they're taking sooooo damn long anyway. I think the insides of these are WAY better than anyone would guess from looking at the outsides! lol

some of the engines i've seen on here make my want to cry they are so nice. I would bet my next paycheck that some of the bikes are in better condition than when they were on the showroom floor!
 
After I dipped my carb bodies in Berryman's chem dip..they came out looking 100% better. You'd be surprised what an overnight soaking in nuclear-make-you-sterile-just-by-looking-at-it-chemical solution can do.
 
Thats about what mine looked like when I got them. I pulled them off stripped them apart and dipped them. Went through two full gallons of dip.

Huh? Why so much dip? I have used the same 'gallon' for about six sets of carbs now, with no apparent reduction in effectiveness. :-s

I should have taken pictures of the sides of them after i took them apart. they had about 1/8 inch of buildup on the sides. Looked like I took these out of a farm tractor or something. I do in home mental healthcare for work so I brought them to work and took a brush to them while the guy I was working with was watching tv/playing video games. Yeah it's a tough life! *rolls eyes* lol I'm going to take a set of picks to them now.
 
ok, this is what the side of carb number 3 looked like after an hour of trying to clean it with a nylon brush and scraping it.

and this is what it looks like now that I dug out my picks and scraped at it for ANOTHER hour or so. I think it was closer to an hour and a half though. My neck is sore from leaning over it so much.

It's almost ready for the chem dip bath.
 
the dip is gonna take a lot of that stuff off....

i would have dipped it first, then scrubbed it later..
 
I'm trying to keep as much of the dirt out of the dip as possible. I think i'm just going to give myself a stiff neck in the long run though.

My neck's hurting just reading this. :-D

At $20/Can for the dip it's one trip to the chiropractor - even if it's covered by your insurance. The dip's like elbow grease in a can.
 
yeah it's $30 where I got the berryman's chem dip and $25 for the chiro co-pay.. hmmmm

lmao I just threw carb 4 in there tonight and I think i'm going to go backwards 4 then 3, 2, 1. Right to left. I figure the more hand work I do on these, the better they are going to come out in the end. I'll post pics tomorrow when I put carb 4 back together, we'll see how well it went!

Amen... Also, when scrubbing with brushes, be aware that the carb bodies are magnesium, pretty soft metal. I used an old "HARD" toothbrush on mine, and they look pretty darn good now. And dont be afraid to use some old fashioned soap and water on em. You are after all going to dip them anyway, and you'll need to rinse with water after that too. The first set of carbs i ever did, i left sitting after pulling them out of the dip. That stuff dries to a nasty sticky goo. And I had to start all over again :( Oh well, live and learn. Oh..and another thing I learned. When you go sticking the lil red straw for the carb spray in the various holes, wear some safety glasses. Those holes come around in suprising places, and somehow, they all seem to aim right at your eyes. Krikey! Like a spitting cobra...have a go at that mate! heh..
