    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

dissapearing bolt

So, I got my clutch cover off, and the springs off, everything was going smoothly, and I got most of the clutch plates off with about 3 left. I tried to pull off more disks, and they kept twisting sideways. So I grabbed a bolt that used to hold on the clutch cover, and put it 180 degrees on the other side of the clutch disks to try to push out the last disk, and i droped it. No big problem I will just grab it once I get this disk out. I pulled off all the disks and proceeded to take out the bolt that had fallen under the clutch basket i felt it and went to grab it but bumped it backwards and then I heard another clank. What the heck! the bolt dissapeared. I continued to feel around and pushed the bolt into a hole... I am assuming the oil pan.... boy am I stupid....... what do you think I should try to do? I might try sticking a magnet down there and trying to pick it out..... aarrrrgg.. heh well if you have any suggestions let me know... I will go work at it some with a magnet and them come check back here

Probably going to have to remove the oil pan to remove it. Will need a new pan gasket too now. :-)

I couldn't agree more. From your description, you dropped it into the bottom of the pan. Using a magnet, you would have to make a 90 degree turn down into the bottom, grab the bolt, somehow raise it up, then figure out how to straighten it out, align it with the hole, then manage to slide it through the hole without dropping it off the magnet. Probablity, .01%.
And probably get the magnet also, so the next time this happens you can grab it with the magnet before you push it into the hole.
 
ugg.. well if this helps any, after closer inspection, it did not fall down one of the holes. I pushed it (sitting on the bike) to the left through a hole about 1/2" to 3/4" and then it dropped. Probobly into the oilpan, So far I have had no luck with the magnet. Do you think that the oil gasket will be salvageable?

NO! unless you want to replace it later after it leaks all over your bike !
 
i guess I will have to wait yet another 5 days for a new gasket too... this sucks... :cry:.
I guess I will "go fishing" one last time, hopefully I catch "the big one"

i just use a silicone sealant for the pan. its never given me problems. just make sure its compatible with oil and you dont need all that much, just enough to have it squish out when you torque the bolts down. everyone will say to buy the proper oem gasket but if you do a tidy there shouldnt be a problem

my two cents.
 
I have some "yama-bond" semi-drying liquid gasket like material some of you are probobly familiar with. Think that will work?

If you use enough silicone to squish out, then you have used enough to also squish in. Silicone turns to glue jelly eventually. Just a few tiny dabs stuck in the engine oil passages and you will be needing a new engine. I wouldnt use the stuff if it was a choice between it and nothing.

I use it on the base side of the gaskets to make it easier to get off but still replace it.These bikes take time and patience,but your reward will be a lot longer than the time spent to do it right!
 
Yamabond is good stuff; I use it on all my bikes. But there is no substitute for doing it right the first time. Bite the bullet, wait for the gasket. But I recommend going ahead now and finding that bolt. Even if it means that the pan is not installed or is just lightly bolted up. Go ahead and find the bolt, prep the pan, and when the gasket comes in all you have to do is install the gasket and get back on the road. JMO.
 
Got it out with a magnet! boy is it my lucky day, I should go buy a lotto ticket :). Thanks for all of your help everyone!!!

I was so excited that I went and got the camera to take a picture before it was all the way out.. heh
 
When I was changing a head gasket I dropped my cam chain down into the case. I was fit to be tied. MY wife suggested I use a magnet on a stick and VOILA the problem was solved. I will never doubt that woman again.

yup, after about 45 minutes of shaking the bike and jamming magnets into the pan I finally got it, my heart raced when I saw it come out and i was EXTREMELY careful when I was pulling it through, almost lost it when the washer part caught on the edge of the hole comming out (look at pic).
Magnets are cool...
