DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Do my forks really need these little washers?

Hi, I have stripped a set of 1150 forks down cleaned and reassembled with new seals but I noticed that one fork had a single washer at the bottom of the damper while the other did not. I checked the owner manual and parts fiche and see they are each supposed to have one thrust washer with a wave washer either side.

They are part numbers 22, 23 & 24 on the attached picture. Can anyone tell me what they do and what happens if they are left out?

Cheers:)

The wave washer is referred to in the shop manual as a spring. They are there for valving purposes and are necessary.

Do you really need brake fluid for your brakes?

Yes Ranger, you do. You see the system is hydraulic and air compr... Oh... You were being facetious... Never mind...

EDIT: interesting thing about the word "facetious" is that it is one of very few words in the English language to have all the vowels in alphabetic order. The more you know...

I was reading this post and had to comment on the edit for trivia's sake. Good job, made me laugh. Sorry for the hi-jack.

Reminds me of something attributed to Mark Twain. Supposedly he was on a train and a guy next to him was trying to impress him and said to Mark Twain, "Did you know that sugar is the only word in the English language where the su sounds like shu?" Mark Twain replied, "Are you sure?"

Thank you for the education.

Stripping other set of forks to see if they have the washers.

You should teach high school.

:D Pulled the spare set of forks down and salvaged the 6 washers from them (and the dust seals were in better condition so I grabbed them as well)

I managed to remove the triple tree and replaced the bearings, and swapped the calipers for others in better nick. Installed braided lines and some headlight ears (have removed all the fairings to go naked) started to swap out the bars for raised bars of a naked EF. Will have to finish (that might be a bit optimistic) him up later in the week.

I did the fork spring cut down mod (removed about 2 inches and replaced with tube spacer) and so far (not ridden yet) it is promising with just a smidge over half inch of static sag (riderless) and with 15 weight fork oil the damping feels pretty good.:D
