A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • This forum is for placing reviews for parts, accessories, gear and service as it relates to your GS motorcycle. The key here is "GS Related". There is a bit of latitude here but we don't want to see a review on Maytag washers just because that's what you use to clean your riding jacket in.

Keep your review as factual as possible and please refrain from personal attacks. Posted articles will be reviewed by the Editors and may be removed at their discretion.

So let's make this a useful addition to the forum! A special pat on the back goes to Hap Call for coming up with this great idea.

The views expressed in this forum are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of "The GSResources" or the editors.

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Dunlop D404 Tires

I recently bought the Shinkos and like them a lot better compared to the 404s. I don't know enough of the technical stuff to explain why but something just feels better to me.

Crikey, I hope everyone realizes this thread is nearly 7 years old...

Anyhoo, here's my current $0.02 on tires:

1) I've installed somewhere between 12 and 15 sets of Avon RoadRiders (on my bike and on bikes belonging to friends) and I've never even seen a cracked one. I'm not saying it didn't happen -- the photos exist and are clear -- but the problem is an isolated one. (please, read up on statistics a bit...) I continue to install and highly recommend Avon RoadRiders.

If the screaming about cracking bugs you, buy whatever makes you happy... it's your bike. I wish Avon paid me a commission and/or gave me free tires, but so far nada... :(

2) For the sake of Truth and Science, my GS850 is currently wearing a set of Shinko 230 Tourmasters as an experiment, and so far I like them a lot. I've only got about 1,000 miles on them, but they handle and stick very well. Those of you attending the Brown County rally next week can observe a firsthand demonstration of Shinko 230s under stress... :D :twistedevil:

I'll wear 'em out as fast as I can and report back, but it will take a few months at least to gather data on tread life and handling as the Shinkos wear. One of the most distinctive and unusual things about the Avon RoadRiders is that they remain wonderfully neutral and consistent in feel all the way to the bitter end. If the Shinkos can duplicate this, I may have a new budget favorite... :D

As for the Dunlop 404s, I wasn't at all happy with the short life and the horrific handling that developed when they were near the end. I abuse the hell out of my motorcycle tires, so YMMV and you will probably never notice a problem. If they make you happy, great. They're not too expensive, very widely available, and reasonably sticky. The tread pattern looks more correct on a vintage bike, if you're the sort who worries about such things.

Hmm... Shinko, eh? Looks to be darn good price for V-rated, and they have the biggie 130/90's. Me likey. :) Thanks!

Frank, a 130 is too wide for the stock ST wheel. Even a 120 is pushing the size threshold. Be careful.
