So I tried this paint as a test to see what it will look like. I am re-painting my 82 GS1100EZ. I can get the 2010 Dodge colour that is a close match to the fancy candy maroon but the paint shop wants $30 a can, Napa wants $35!. So I thought I might try this and if all looks good final coat it with SprayMax 2K. I am on a budget for this or I would have gone to a body shop and have them do it.

Cheers

I think it looks pretty darn good. But even by a poor picture its not as shiny as it could be. Id wet sand it with 1200 before Id clear coat.

In my opinion, 1200 is too fine a grit to use before clear coating.

Can you wet sand metallics before clear coat?
I like the color just not sure if its a perfect match to the original color.
This was just a test, I sprayed it outside in my trailer.

kdo58:

Is that the red metal specks that you used? If so I think it looks great.
How long do you let the base color cure before you apply the 2K clear coat?
Also any wet sanding done?

Cheers
Paul

No wet sanding, tried to wet sand and ended up respraying the clear coat.
I waited about 1/2 an hr to spray the clear coat.

I think you did a fabulous job, looks really great! I can't paint at all, I always have runs or orange peel or something, but your paint looks fantastic. Great job. BTW, my parents used to live in Puyallup many moons ago. It sure is beautiful up there.

Is that Duplicolor Paint shop laquer?

gsrick.
I used the Duplicolor Metal Specks in a can and yes it is laquer. kdo58 used the same thing.

So my plan is now to get all the bodywork sanded, primed and ready for paint. Its not in bad shape so hopefully a scuff and some touch-ups and I should be ready to go. I will do all the pieces with the base coat then I will have to wait a week before I clear so I am hoping that doesn't cause any problems.

Cheers guys.

Ok guys after lots of sanding, priming, sanding, painting, sanding, my paint is complete.
I just have to wet sand now and polish then apply the decals.
I'm happy with it for now, like I said I will get a proper paint job down the road.

Another one.
You can really see the flake in the sun but I can't get a good picture of it.

So what I am doing is as follows:

-wet sand with 2000 grit
-rub down with rubbing compound
-rub down with polishing compound
-wax

I have done the front fender and it looks ok, definitely got rid of the orange peel but it looked shinier before I did all this? Maybe more buffing.
I am using a princess auto 6" orbital buffer.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I thought I posted I tried wet sanding and did not like it and ended up reshooting 2k and left it alone. My 2cents

Don't wax it if it's been less then 90 days of curing time. You can buy and use a product from Meguiers at auto parts stores called Show Glaze (#7) until it's cured. Anything with silicon in it will trap the air that's still gassing out.

Thank you nvr2old, will do.
I did a second buff and it looks allot better.

Cheers
