Electrosport stator and regulator

I just installed an electrosport stator and regulator in my 78 gs1000. I connected the three yellow wires from the stator to the three yellow wires on the regulator. I connected the black wire from the regulator to the negative side of the battery. I did not connect the green white or the white red in the harness to anything. I'm confused on what to do with the red wire from the regulator. I have connected it to the red wire in the harness that used to connect to the stock rectifier but I must not have a complete circuit somewhere because all I get is the headlight on and the starter won't crank. I thought maybe I had a bad starter relay so I have replaced that also. Can someone please help

Yes, I had all stock parts with separate regulator and rectifier. The green white and white red wires are the old loop to the headlight and they are not connected to anything.

There are two red wires that hang around, might be looking at the wrong one.

The wire you are looking for would probably be on the left side of the bike and probably between the fuse box and the carbs. To determine if that is the wire, use a test light or voltmeter to verify that it has power. It does not matter if the key is on or off, that red wire will be 'hot' all the time. Now, pull the MAIN fuse, that red wire should go to zero volts. There should be a connector there, one side went to the output of the charging system, the other side feeds the bike. It is that "other" side that you need to connect your new R/R to.

If the Electrosport Stators are still built like the ones they sold several years ago they are fine, but the R/R is no better than the later stock Suzuki parts. Both are still shunt type R/R's that eventually perpetuate the electrical woes of old. The series R/R's are the only real upgrades out there.

Unless you found a GREAT deal on an Electrosport stator, I can save you about $30 off their retail price.

I have freshly-rewound stators for $85, shipped to your door, as long as your front door has an address in the "Lower 48". :D

I use shindengen 6 wire reg/rec on my 1000 and 750. Both have heated grips and run with headlight on always, no problems. Using a electrosport unit i had conection heat problems overcharging and battery trouble. It failed after a year and half, of course on holiday in the middle of nowhere in western Scotland highlands. I emailed electrosport but never got a reply.

This is where I am at with the whole thing. Last summer the bike ran fine but the battery wouldn't stay charged. The stator looked a little crisp and some connectors looked hot. I did some reading on this site and then purchased a new stator and r/r unit. Now I can't get the starter to engage and get it started. Did some more reading and thought the starter relay was bad. Got a new one still the same thing. I bridge the two terminals and the starter kicks in. On the stator and r/r I connected the yellows to yellow, the ground to the battery, and the red to the red that the old r/r units were connected to. I know they are two different systems but can one make the other not work or is this a starting problem? Help please!

I'm wondering whether the stator and RR are matched properly ? Why would two products from the same company not have the same wiring scheme. When I purchased my Electrosport RR it was plug and play and the cooling fins and size were significantly larger than the Suzuki one.
Regarding your starting problem, that sounds like your solenoid is toast. Someone in the states can pipe up with where to get a cheap one from an auto store.

I am coming to find out , with a little ingenuity it is absolutely possible to get a flat tire from miswiring the horns.

I remember someone else asking "It is possible to have problems when just one wire is out of place?"

Don't these people know that without all the wires there will be in insufficient store of smoke in the circuits which is how the electrons figure out where to go?Juts be careful to not get a smoke leak.

"......is this a starting problem? "

yeah, until bike starts you can't test charging system! You "bridged the two terminals" ,as in the two big terminals?? Have you tried using jumper wire from battery positive terminal to trigger wire connection (green/white wire) on solenoid? This bypasses everything (key switch, starter button, kill switch, clutch safety switch). If solenoid and starter motor still doesn't kick in, make sure solenoid frame has a good ground connection before you pronounce it NG.

Looks like we kicked a hornets nest . The sparks at work sometimes mumble - red to red green to green and blue to bits !:p. SMOKENNNNNN
