Ok heres the deal .....my stator took a dump on me so I'm replacing the stator and r/r unit together. I was reading through the stator papers on this site and I see the Electrosport stators and r/r units were highly recommended so without doing further research I ordered each and just received it todays mail. I checked the stator and its showing .9 ohm on each wire so I know its ok. After opening the box tho I see these stators are made in china... Now I work for a company that builds electric motors and we make our own stators and we still get 2 versions from china. The china quality leaves something to be desired but not really a lot of issues with them. I did some online research about the electrosport stators and I see a lot of negative stories on there quality/reliability. Why would this GS site recommend this brand if it has known quality issues :?:. Thoughts out there before I install this setup.....lets hear them good and bad. The stator I received doesn't look to bad I'm more concerned with the reliability issues.

You should have researched here in the forum. If you had you would have learned that Electrosport ain't so hot. There are better choices, such as Ricks. In particular, there are better R/R's available for less money.

This forum has tons of info, you just need to learn to search it out. That info on the home page is OLD, and not being maintained very much.

It says at the top of the page in the stator papers it was updated 3-1-13. Surely someone would have mentioned it there if these were less than quality.....If there bad why are they still advertised there? I thought the stator papers were the Bible of stator problems?

Electro sport supports the website so the GSR editors don't say anything derogatory about ES including making any required changes to the stator pages.

I prefer the ES stators ( at least the way they were; have not seen any lately) but the R/r is a simple shunt r/r and will be disappointing. The Compugire is best and there are some cheaper alternatives from there down

i almost got an electrosport, but i went with ricks...i also had a ricks tiny r/r for my 850 which burned up in a few months, they tested the stator and put new wires/connectors on it and warrantied the ricks

another memeber sent me a shindegen or however its spelled r/r and ive had no trouble since...

now if my ricks stator last all year ill be happy...i ride everyday, no extra electrical accessories and direct wired r/r and stator...

electrosport

electrosport

I fitted an electrosport r/r and it only lasted 2 years, when it failed it just popped the main fuse one morning when i was hundreds of miles from home. I had a tourmax unit fedexed out and have had no trouble since. When i got home i e mailed electrosport and heard zip back from them:mad:. Wont be using them in future.

I would prefer the Rick's. And to prevent future stator failure, replace the R/R with a Shindengen MOSFET unit.

had no issues contacting ricks...no stupid press one for english and say your problem and that other automated bs...

things should not be that expensive if its built cheap..

I have just sent out some stators to be rewound. The guy that is doing the work said that he was shocked at the quality of the winding on the ones that I sent him.
I don't know who wound them, and I don't even remember if they were original or aftermarket.

I will be checking out his work, as we have at least two bikes here that will get them installed, so will report back with y'all (or is that all y'all?) shortly.

There is a bit of a quantity discount, and I offered to be a middleman, so I might be able to offer freshly re-wound stators at a very attractive price. :D

Electrosport stators put out too much current for the stock harness, plus the R/R shunts the heat back into the stator, which cooks itself. A regular output stator is much better. Better yet, get a series R/R like Posplayr suggests. The stator will last longer.

The stock GS wire harness has design flaws related to the charging system. Again, do some research here and you will learn how to fix it.

Lastly, Basscliff's website has info on an updated Stators Paper test (written by Posplayr). Using his guide I found bad connections between by R/R and the power return path to the battery. You need to pull the wire terminals out of the plastic connector plugs to clean them, sort of a pain, but well worth the effort to see the system working like intended.

Echoing Ed's comments and reiterating what has been mentioned here before

From my GS1100ED experience, the MOSFET R/R and the higher power of the Electrosport will result in a burned out stator toot-sweet. (I had significant discoloration after only 250 miles on a HiWay 33 trip)

After the switch over to the Compufire there has been no further browning of my ES stator. :D

P.S it is really not an issue with the GS harness; when the R/R is SHUNTING (verses opening as a SERIES R/R) it is the stator itself that can't handle it's own power unless you spray it with more cooling oil to remove the excess heat.

Jim, I was referring to the problem with the stupid stator wire loop going to the hand control. That leg often overheats and melts, destroying a good portion of the harness in the process. Also, the R/R grounds are bad on most GS bikes and must be fixed.

I figure with all Ive read it seems a lot of the bad press has been from 2010/11 and back. I know electro sport was bought out a few years back by Procom and haven't seen a lot of bad press since then. The only thing I can tell is people are hooking up a lot of extra lighting/accessories, heated vests etc. and really making the stator r/r system work hard. The only thing I run is stock headlight, tail light, and gauge bulbs nothing else. I would think this stator and r/r could handle that much without overtaxing it. I'm eliminating the wire to the handlebar for the on/off switch which my bike don't use or have and wiring stator direct to rr unit. ground wire will run direct to battery. I replaced all the connectors on the new stator and r/r unit and soldered them on and will use dielectric grease on them. I'm sending my old stator off to be rewound for a backup. At least I got roadside assistance on my insurance coverage ...:D. Really cant understand why the original would fail with only 10,000 original miles on the bike. Only had 7,000 on it when I bought it and one owner. They surely don't go bad from sitting do they? I had my 81 650 with about 35,000 on it and never a problem.

good luck...................

Dave 17954;
The faster the rotor magnets spin by stator windings, the more output the stator can deliver- if given the opportunity courtesy of R/R. You need enough at 1500 rpm to keep bike happy; unfortunately as revs go up with the standard shunt R/R, the stator is making more power than bike needs, so R/R has to dump it. All this produces heat in stator. Now imagine if you could open circuit momentarily the stator's windings to decrease its output at those times when bike didn't need any more power- it would run cooler. This is what a series R/R does. If you can afford one, look for a Compufire or a Shindengen SH-775.
At the very least , get a used 30 yearold Shindengen R/R - these have proven to be more rugged than the stock R/R's and are likely better than most of the aftermarket ones. Charging system failure is real common, so why not improve your odds!
