A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Engine clink

I'm currently workin on an 82 gs450. Everything seems to be workin fine except for a little clink I'm getting from sounds like, based my block of wood stethoscope, the right exhaust valve. It seems fairly slow. A clink per second, but sounds so clear. I was thinkin it could have been the cam chain tensioner. Tightened and loosened it, but the clink was unaffected. I had adjusted the valves about a month ago with no noise. I pulled the valve cover and checked the gaps. All were in spec and chain seemed good. The noise went away for a couple days then started back up. Im currently trying to upload a video. Any advice is much appreciated.

Does it have a slight miss or a shake when it does it? Vacuum gauge?

"..thinkin it could have been the cam chain tensioner. Tightened and loosened it, "
just how did you do this? Make sure you understand how chain tensioner works - it's simplicity confuses folks.

I Loosened the lock nut and twisted the screw on the back side. The other side has the spring knurled nut...I believe it's called.

Hmmm. Head to this link to explain how to set/release tensioner for happy motoring. The slotted lockscrew on plunger shaft must be backed off and held in place with locknut. The knurled knob/spring gizmo pushes on ball which lets plunger shaft push out against chain-but not push back. You might have reset tensioner incorrectly and it's anxious to move out and take up chain slack, best to check.

It is a automatic tensioner, after you get it reset, don't mess with it. Hopefully you haven't skipped a tooth.

So I removed and cleaned the tensioner. It looked to be in decent shape...as far as I can tell. I followed the directions on engine odds and ends, got it all back together and still got that click!

I'm stumped with the once per second click stuff. Since you said it seemed from right exhaust valve side, how about disconnecting/extracting tach drive gizmo ?

Me too. Thats why i posted the video....it's weird, it seems like a slow click for any valve stuff. Tach gizmo?

The tach drive runs off gear on exhaust cam next to right exhaust valve. It's a rinky dinky way to drive things at 90 degrees but it works . I'm wondering if the teeth aren't meshing correctly at times , or chipped?

At 1200 rpm engine, camshafts are turning 600 rpm or 10revs a second - too fast for once a second click stuff. But a point on chain itself would be considerably slower to make full "loop" ,i.e. pass same point- maybe a chain link is hitting something.

That's a good point. Anything come to mind that could be makin contact?

Hey, I'm grasping at straws here! I'd pull valve cover and spark plugs-then rotate engine slowing and look for something odd on camchain .

Alright so...I pulled the valve cove and checked everything best I could. @ tom203- i checked out the tach drive, trippy little thing, and all looked good. I spun it several times and couldnt see anything that stuck out or looked wrong. I checked clearances again and discovered that all my clearances are over by .02mm. Spec is .03-.08. mine are at .10-.13, but i'm not sure that is bad enough to cause any clinking. i could be wrong. Also i noticed, while cranking it over, that there is a spot or two when rotating that it spins on its own. That make sense? So im rotating the engine by hand and at a certain spot it not only gets super easy but spins on its own. Wouldn't that be a compression issue? my compression was 140 and 150...

Easy spin spot is likely from crankshaft balancer and/or valve springs as you rotate. Those clearances should not cause this click , but best to reduce them. (I run mine at .0015 inch to .004 inch max). Make sure buckets turn freely in head when lobs are off them
