DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Engine still bogging even after new battery

My 86 gs 550 was bogging very badly and couldnt rev past about 7k rpm. My battery was also not holding a charge. This led me to beleive that my problem was either my stator, R/R or my battery. So just today I put my battery from my polaris snowmobile (it is same size around but about 1 inch taller) I fired the bike up (turned over and started with ease) and it idled beautifully. I let it idle for a good 10 minutes and then shut it off, waited about 30 seconds and started it back up without any problem. Next was the test drive. It ran fine and can now rev well past 7k rpm but it is still bogging quite a bit in the higher rpm (above 5ish) Anybody know what the problem could be?? My bike is stock and has a new air filter, the valves were adjusted my the previous owner about 6k miles ago. Thanks.

Some more information would be helpful...

Model
Year
status of maintenance: valve adjustment, new carb O-rings, tank rust free, vacuum sync, type of air cleaner, etc,
Mods?

the tank is rust free. Dont know about the vacuum sync or carb o rings though.

you might want to put a multi meter on it while idling and at 5000 and at 8000 just to see what it is charging, simply changing a battery will not cure a bogging problem. A battery is just a storage medium for getting the bike to start, after that it is the charging system, air/fuel system and mechanical condition of the engine.

I just noticed this now that it is dark outside but when I rev my engine my headlight and signal lights get dimmer, not brighter. What does this mean?? Thanks

It means you need to read the Stator Papers, because some thing is wrong in your charging system

i would see if you stator is working then check the r/r. IMO

My only advice is for you to carefully inspect your air box an carbs boots ,make sure they are seal properly an the clamps are tight. I have
the same problem with my 750 the air box rubber boots have hard an dryed out, thus not sealing around the carbs ! good luck

+1: Read the Stator Papers. This symptom sounds like voltage foldback which does not help you yet. Break out the Digital multi meter and check the voltage across your battery at 1) Idle 2) 2000 rpm & 3) 5000 rpm. If the voltage value of #3 is less than #2 than you have excessive resistance in the charging circuit. A good place to start is to clean all your charging system electrical connections till they are nice & shiney. Then find the charging system & battery grounds and ensure they are nice & shiney and hooked to the same point.

Then read this from Posplayr for further details http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=152769

Almost every charging system fault starts with corrosion and bad connectors, if left unchecked expensive parts will soon begin to fail. The Stator Papers is your friend.
