Finding the correct choke cable for my bike?

Hello all,

My choke cable was pretty stiff but still usable all through last season. But this past winter must have been a long enough period without movement to allow alot of buildup in the cable sleeve, as now it feels like I'm gonna break the knob off before I can pull it up far enough to start the bike. The weird thing is that it has no resistance if pushed down.

So from what I have read on here, of other people facing this problem, the only real solution is a new choke cable. My problem at the moment is that I can find no cable that lists my model (79 GS550E) in the bikes that it will fit. I tried bike bandit, but for some odd reason they don't list my particular year/model. I'd really rather buy from them because I have had good experience with them before, and like their super fast shipping.

so the long and short of it is, if anyone can tell me the part number of what I am looking for, or where I could find it, I'd really appreciate it!

Before you buy a new choke cable, I'd suggest you operate the choke slide mechanism, by hand, at the carbs. You may find the problem is there and that a good cleaning will take care of the problem.

Take the cable off and work some oil down into it

I'm a little confused. You say in your post a '79 but your sig says an '80. The part number for the '80 choke cable is 58400-45110. $15.43 at partshark.com.

Don't the '79 carbs have a choke lever right there on the #1 carb?

I can move the slide on the carb if I pull on the cable at the same time, so I'm gonna get some 3in1 oil and see if I can"t lube things up a bit.

That makes two of us, the guy I bought it from, the title, and every picture of that year say that my bike is an '80, but on the vin plate on the frame it says that it was built in 08/79, which would make it a 79 right? or am I forgetting something?

If it's anything like the GS1000's, the '78 had the lever, and the '79 the choke cable.

If it was manufactured in August of 79, it is probably the 1980 model year. Does it have CV carbs (Mikuni BS32SS) and no kick start? If this is true then you've got a 1980 model.
