    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

float needle retention spring...GS850G

under the float, I think it is called the needle valve, there is a very delicate little retention spring that kept it in the seat. When I look at the fiche, it doesn't show one. The first two that I have removed have basically fallen apart because they were so rusted. Are they necessary? It looks to me as if the float itself wouldn't allow the needle valve to escape. If they are needed, any idea of how to get new ones? The spring would hold the valve in #49

I have seen carbs with them and without them, I don't think that they really make any difference.

Thanks Steve! I put the original seats under a magnifying glass and they have a little lip on them for the spring. The replacement ones I got are smooth and won't hold a spring anyway. I am a bit suspect of these rebuild kits now. A couple of the other parts don't seem to be exact matches. They are K&L kits from Z1.

Thanks for that link. nice to see other Mariners on here. I thought spring was coming but now talk of a big storm on Tuesday.

There's 2 types of float needle retention - the ones you have now where the clip is on the top of the seat or where the clip is on the needle:

The second one slips over the float tang.

In practice, as long as you are careful re-assembling the carbs / putting the bowls back on you shouldn't really need either.
 
The carb kits are well-known to be utter and complete crap. Shoddy imitation junk throughout, and a complete waste of money.

Are ya picking up the message here?

Clean up your original brass parts and use a carb o-ring kit from cycleorings.com . You might want bowl gaskets, but these can normally be re-used for decades.
