My 700ES felt a little squishy up front--little rebound dampening so I decided to inspect it. I found the fork oil to be filthy and also found that it has Progressive springs. It only had 8 ounces of oil in one side and 9 in the other. The manual calls for 10.4 ounces but it also calls for the oil to be 170mm from the top of the tube. These two measurements are not even close to each other. It take abouit 16 ounces to get the oil that close to the top. However when you drop in the Progressive springs--which are bigger that stock--you end up with only a couple inches of air. Now I followed the instructions when I put Progressive springs in my GS1100ES (and now have misplaced them) and it turned out very stiff afterward. I thought is was because of the stiffer springs but now I see it also must have had little air in the forks after the install. It seems like the level should be measured after the springs are in so that the thicker spring would still have enough air for movement. I don't know where to set these but they can't be right as they are. I have to be missing something.
