Frame gusset prep question

I am getting ready to do my frame gusseting this weekend.

For those who have already done this did you do any special prep to the inside of the pipe or the rectangular stock for corrosion prevention prior to welding?

Or have you done anything after welding for that matter?

Both the contact points on the frame as well as the stock being used (be it plate or pipe) taken to clean bare metal with a grinder then the whole frame powder coated after complete.

All pieces must be clean prior to welding - there's really nothing you can do to rust proof prior to welding as you risk weld contamination.

You can get 'weld-through' paint. I've never used it so can't comment (supposed to be very good) but I wouldn't have thought you needed anything prior to welding anyway.

I kind of see what's saying now in terms of the INSIDE of tubing, but to answer, no, I didn't do anything. It was rust free when installed, but no special prep.

You can use welder's zinc spray to keep the insides of the pipe nice and corrosion free. You can weld through it, but I wouldn't because of the fumes created when heating it. It is available at most welding supply stores, but it is kind of pricey. I believe the last can I bought was ~$20 for a 4 oz. mini can.

Once you have the pieces welded together you could always just give it a liberal spray inside of the tubes with the zinc, or corrosion resistant paint if you are worried about it.
