Hey all. I haven't posted for a while. I am replacing the valve cover gasket on my 1984 gs750se pop up katana. The issue. Seems lkike the front cam chain guide (exhaust side) does not seat low enough. Meaning the top of the guide is slightly higher then the top of the head. So when you set the valve cover on without the gasket it rockes side to side because the valve cove is sitting on top of the front cam chain guide. So the valve cover does not sit flush. If I put the gasket in then all is well however I am hesitant to torque it done like this. Any ideas. Thanks

not sitting in it little slot down in the tunnel. Did u take the cams out recently?

I agree, you have not got it sitting in the pocket/slot correctly it can be a little fidlely but it should fit flush.

I can't see the bottom but the top pocket is easily seen and it is sitting in the bottom of the top pocket. I have not had the cams out but the previous owners could have. There is an indentation on the top of the chain guide that looks like the valve cover was over torqued and left an impression on it. See in the pic attached

Here is a better pic showing the impression on top of the front chain guide left by the valve cover.

Does anyone know how to replace the front cam chain guide (1984 GS750SE pop up) ?

Wishful thinking but can it be pulled from the top once the valve cover is off ? or is it some how hooked/secured at the bottom

thanks

Sits within a slot/pocket in the crankcase and then in a slot on top of the cylinders, the head needs to come off, likely not the news you wanted to hear.

I've been having difficulty with my 79 gs850 trying to get the chain guide to seat properly. It seems to be sitting in the pocket correctly but every time I put everything together and try to rotate the crank it's binding at the crank. Is it safe to assume this is because I didn't get the guide in the slot by the crank? I'm guessing I'll have to pull the head again and make sure it's in the right place before I replace the head, which I didn't do before :(

The rear guide is bolted down. The front guide just sits in a slot. The front guide doesn't have much to do. The chain should be taunt and just runs top to bottom against it.

Is your cam tensioner installed and functioning correctly?
