    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

fully synthetic oil.

Had to put new oil in my 1983 GS750T the other day,( dropped a side casing off to repair a gasket) but only oil I had was 5w40 fully synthetic.

I know its supposed to have 10w40 oil but its what I had available. I have been told by my bro that fully synthetic oil is not good for wet clutches, and that I need to get it out and clean the clutch plates etc.

Is there any truth to this? what sort of damage could it do/already have done? Or will it be ok till I can afford to buy some better oil. The oil i put in was new and clean.

As long as it doesn't say energy conserving on the bottle it will be fine. I've got rotella 5w-40 synthetic in my bike right now. I also run the 5w-40 in my diesel car, great stuff.
 
Without getting into an argument about the pros and cons of fully synthetic... my understanding of the issues surrounding clutches and oil have more to do with the additives than the oil itself - some "anti-fillintheblank" "(generic) wearguard", "molysuperantisliphitechand****e" gunk can actually affect the way the fibers and steels behave - causing slip.

That said, I am a newbie to all this... don't take my word as gospel.

Regarding the "5W vs. 10W" - that low number is about low temp viscosity. I'm not sure if it would mean anything to your motor once it warmed up.
 
Thanks for that brothers, I did think it a bit strange. Oil is oil is oil, as long as it's loobing up the bits it needs to, then it should be ok.

Oil is not oil, but 5W-40 synthetic is fine, even preferred, over 10W-40 dino oil as long as it doesn't have a bunch of "energy conserving" additives.
 
checked the bottle and it has no energy conserving shi* in it.

Rotella 5W-40 syn is now marked "MA", meaning it's Officially suitable for motorcycles with wet clutches. So there.

I've been using it for a couple of years in all my bikes. Good stuff! :D
