    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gas cap rebuild

Hello,
Has anyone tried to replace/rebuild the rubber gasket on the gas cap? Mine is an '81 GS850L and the gasket has all but crumbled off. It will leak gas on a full tank.

I tried a lot of searches, but failed to find one to match. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Depending on your model that rubber gasket may not come separate from the
entire gas cap assembly.

This was the case for my '82 550L.

What I did was get a piece of rubber gasket material (cork will probably work too)
and cut out a ring which will fit over the existing gasket. I then used a little gas
resistant sealer to bond it on the old gasket.

But the problem you describe could also be caused by a blocked up vent hole in the
cap or in the filler neck.
 
You could also get a new gas cap and transplant the guts of the key mechanism so your old key will continue to work.

The gasket is not available separately, unfortunately, and it is not a flat shape that would be easy enough to fabricate.
 
I pulled it apart, easy to do by taking off the back, and found that there was also a metal fingered ring behind it. I guess it's to apply pressure to the ring. My rubber part is all but gone.

A new cap and tranferring parts is going in the wrong direction in my thinking, although I already have to have two seperate keys due to an igition replacement.

Looks like I will need to "engineer" something.
 
Looking at my gasket, it looks like it may be possible to simply cut away (or maybe it could even be left) the flat area and glue on a new rubber disc. I think that is what I will try when I have time.
