As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

New to a 82 GS650GL

How many ounces or quarts of 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil do I need to put in?

Where is the drain plug located? I think I see the pour plug near left side of bike exhaust.
Shaft drive

Thanks in advance. :)

The GS650G/GL is the only G series bike that shares the motor oil with the secondary drive except for the '91-'93 GSX1100G's as far as I know. Yes, there is another drain plug but it is not just for the secondary drive like in the 850, 1000 and 1100G models.

Any chance you have checked your service manual? :-k
(Take a look at pdf page 31.)

You should know that the secondary drive (the right-angle drive at the back of the engine) uses engine oil, but has its own drain plug. When you change the engine oil, you need to remove TWO drain plugs, along with the filter, to do a proper oil change.

The final drive about which you are asking, does, indeed, use hypoid gear oil, the 80w-90 you mentioned will do just fine.

The drain plug for the final drive (the one at the wheel) is ... well, ... at the bottom of the housing. The fill hole (which is all the level-checking hole) is about half-way up the back side of the housing.

.

Also, the final drive doesn't take much gear oil. (about 7 ounces IIRC?). A quart will give you at least three or four changes.

Anything in the range 75W-90 to straight 90W that mentions hypoid gears or GL-5 on the label will be fine.
