    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gear oil for shafty

Sorry if this has been asked before (I bet it has) but I had a search around the site and couldn?t find anything.

Just wanting to give the GS1000G some extra tlc and was thinking to change the gear oil and final drive unit.

spec says SAE 90, but I?ve got some bottles of SAE 75w90 in the garage... is this just the modern equivalent and ok to use of is it different stuff and should I by the correct grade??
 
That's what I used. Hard to find straight 90w. The spec also gives you a GL - GL5 I think from memory.

That’s great, thanks. Just checked primary and secondary drive units and levels are good and what’s there looks fairly new. Previous owner had recommissioned it after a few years sleep so looks like they did that at least.

So I’ll leave it for now but at least I know I can use up my leftovers next time round.
 
FWIW, you can find straight 90W, intended for outboard motors. There's no point, though.

Use whatever 80W-90 or 75W-90 they happen to have at the auto parts store. As long as it's GL-5, brand doesn't matter.

The final drive on a GS is one of the more lightly loaded places gear oil can end up. I change it every year or so and it always comes out looking pretty much the same as when it went in. If you're reasonably careful, you can get two years out of one liter bottle. :D

I get a little more life than that out of a bottle, probably because I don't put on quite the miles that Brian does. :-k

I change the fluid in the secondary drive and final drive (and lube the splines) when I change a tire.

Speaking of extra TLC, and the rear end of the bike,
Steve mentioned lubing (grease) the hub-splines in rear wheel. Learn about that if you don't already know.
Not really extra. Is required, basic.
