General emergency kit

So either this weekend or next the wife and I are going to do a loop that is about 190 miles plus any investigating of interesting side roads.

One of the AWESOME things about Arizona is the ability to get lost and potentially get yourself in trouble. I plan on heading up the 87 and then come around and down the 188 . Much of the ride will be through national forest. No gas stations no nothing.

This will be the longest I have taken the GS out since its rebirth and I will admit to being a little worried.

So what do I bring to get myself out of trouble if something should happen. I know I cant bring a support truck full of tools and materials so I need to be able to get it in a bag. I think I know what tools I need ??

My tires are in good shape and have been slimed. I have two extra main fuses and a couple of back up fuses on the bike already. My battery is near new and the bike will roar to life even when shut down for a week.

I was thinking crimps in case I have to do any wiring repairs on the way since I cant solder and maybe a hank of wire. I even have some of those crimps that work simply by screwing barrels together which can be done pretty tool-less as a temp fix but I will have a leatherman. I guess an extra bulb for binkers but I would be doing this during the day so if a light went out I could still make it home fine.

So besides fuses and crimps and a basic tool kit .. what else should I bring? Would an electrical meter be insane? Starter fluid?

When I'll be riding in the boonies I generally add a first aid kit and an extra gasoline bottle to my kit, and bring along my normal tool roll. Other than that don't worry too much about the bike and just enjoy the ride.

The more stuff that you carry ,the less likely you are to need any of it..
I carry spare throttle and clutch cables, ignitor, tire plug repair kit,mini air compressor,lithium jump starter, fuel lines and siphon bottle (in case I need to "borrow" fuel), tool assortment, etc,
Only thing that ever happenned to me on ride was a broken clutch cable- broke suddenly with no warning.

Second on the clutch and throttle cable. Mine went as well at the bottom of the hill a few blocks from home. Very sudden, no warning. I keep a spare set in my Vetter Fairing. Likely will never need them but .... better to be prepared.

I had a clutch cable break last summer. ABSOLUTELY SUCKED riding 4 miles in stop go traffic without a clutch cable... Caught a cool shop just at closing time. the older owner of the place MADE me a new one... Wanted to charge me $10 ! ! ! I had $19 in cash on me, gave it all to him...

I carry this lithium battery pack to either jump start the bike, charge a phone (or two) or just for the flashlight it has on it.

wipes to clean my hands
rags
duct tape
electrical tape
wire for tying and small bit of stranded for electrical
basic kit of connectors, test light etc
slime brand tire plug/ Co2 inflator (not tried and proven yet)

clutch and throttle cables as mentioned

Carry the stock tool bag that comes with the bike under the seat, roll of electrical tape, couple wire ties, pocket knife, small rag, 3 ft of electrical wire, cell phone, bottle of water and a small bag of cookies for a stranded in nowhere moment waiting for a friend to arrive. Don't over think it. If every thing that could go wrong does, you would never leave the house again anyhow. LOL

If you have "gone through the bike" thoroughly, and have 1500+ miles on it, it should be just fine. I would add "fuses" to Earl's list, but that's about it.

That being said, the longer the trip, the more chances you have for some sort of failure. And, add another bike or three, you have that many more chances for a failure. With that in mind. we will be carrying considerably more in the way of tools and spares when we go on our "little ride" later this summer, but for your little jaunt, I would be more worried about having some water, snacks and <maybe> a bit of fuel.

So we went for a 210 mile ride today and I brought the typical stuff in my list. How much of it did we use? Two bottles of water, LOL!

Thank you everyone for the AWESOME replies!! Some stuff here I absolutely didn't consider. I just replaced the throttle cable but kept the old one so I can use that as a spare so I need to acquire a clutch cable. Light enough to bring the extra insurance. I even have the wife following the thread. All great suggestions.

I have gone over the bike with a fairly fine tooth comb. The only thing outstanding that is bothering me but shouldnt impact my ride is the sprockets and chain are looking at a replacement. Nothing horrible but its about half way through its adjustment and I can feel a sticking spot when I turn the wheel by hand. It certainly has another 1000 or more miles in it especially with my grandfatherly pace but everything else checks out.
