If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • This forum is for placing reviews for parts, accessories, gear and service as it relates to your GS motorcycle. The key here is "GS Related". There is a bit of latitude here but we don't want to see a review on Maytag washers just because that's what you use to clean your riding jacket in.

Keep your review as factual as possible and please refrain from personal attacks. Posted articles will be reviewed by the Editors and may be removed at their discretion.

So let's make this a useful addition to the forum! A special pat on the back goes to Hap Call for coming up with this great idea.

Good Ultrasonic Cleaner?

I cannot speak for anyone else but Before & After pics using the Ultrasonic Cleaner Stainless Steel Industry Heater w/Timer would help . . .

TIA

I have the 3L version of that ultrasonic and I've finally found something that doesn't make the carbs darken.

I used distilled water from Walmart, about $2.00 for 4 liters and mixed Franks Special Cleaner 40:1 and it worked really well.

Cleaned out the nastiest sticky dried fuel and stabilizer residue and varnish in about 2 hours at 50 degrees Celsius.

Here's the unit I have, a before and after shot.

The one on the right has had 2 hours the other one just 30 mins or so as I pulled them out to remove the valve needles and seat with some heat after they cleaned up a bit.

I also put the jets into clean up a little, they are much cleaner than before but could use some more time or a brass cleaner product to brighten them up a little.

My chinese cheepie 6L ultrasonic died. It alternates between being quite quiet and making a screeching noise. The solution looks still so don't think there is any shaking going on or at least not much.

Bummer Ed! Going to chase them up about it? Let us know how it goes if so...

The one I built to replace my high-end cleaner that broke is still going strong for over 5 years. I use it a lot as well. What did you end up doing with your el-cheapo?

After posting the above I tried it again and the shrieking noise has stopped and it seems to be working okay. Not very confidence inspiring. Not sure if it's okay or junk.

oh All of them look so good
thank you guys so much for sharing this
:))

I'm looking for better solution for ultrasonic carb cleaning than water and Simple Green. I tried distilled water vs tap water and didn't see any difference. Some carb specialists claim Simple Green is the wrong ph for the job, but are secretive about what they use instead, won't share.

I use distilled water and this, I usually heat to 50 degrees C and dilute up to 40:1 or stronger if the carbs are really bad.

The problem with tap or well water it can have minerals that affect the alloy adversely and the simple green will work but I found it would darken the carbs.

The Franks special cleaner did not darken the cards and in fact made them brighter if anything.

David.

From reading the Frank's product description, it sounds like dozens of available mildly caustic cleaning solutions. What does the ingredients label say? Is it an alkaline solution and detergents? Guess that's what's most effective for carb cleaning...

The first ultrasonic cleaner I built was crude, but worked great for small batches. I was basically an electric hand sander solidly strapped to a rugged plastic container with a screw top. Hung the contraption above the basement sink and left it there for a few hours, just in case it decided to foam up. I used demineralised water and Pinesol in it with good results. I used a 50\50 mix but you likely could do it with much less Pinesol. Made my '77 GS VM26 carbs look much brighter. I'd almost say brand new.

I'll be trying out this 43$ 6L ultrasonic cleaner to see how it compares to the hand sander: https://www.ebay.com/itm/6L-Ultraso...l-Industry-Heated-Heater-w-Timer/263266583267

Doing a set of carbs and not confident in my elcheapo chinese ultrasonic; it makes a high pitched vibration noise sometimes and questioning how well it shakes. Took off the bottom cover and everything seems fine. Think the noise may have been some vibration from the cover itself. Found this nifty aluminum foil test and my unit pierces holes in it very quickly so think it's okay after all. Fingers crossed anyway...

Oh, and using Yamaha carb dip sauce inside. Cut it a little more than normal in order to fill up the tub. Not the ideal stuff I suppose but think it's going to work well.

So, anybody actually going to share their results?
Looking for a smaller one myself, but it's maddening trying to sort it all out.

What did you buy and how do you like it?

My unit still alternates between loudly humming and shrieking. It works okay but not as well as carb dip for deep cleaning the passages. I use a double cleaning process; dip for the first go round followed by ultrasonic for final cleaning.

I have the Harbor Freight one. It is not a substitute for dipping, and the parts never come out shiny clean. They still look like 40 year old parts but the passages are clean. I got some caustic parts cleaner concentrate from HF as well that seems OK. I think if you want show results you need some sort of vibratory cleaner as a last step. The HF one can only do one carb at a time, but so can my 1 gallon of Berryman's dip. That way it takes 4 days minimum per set of carbs.
