DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello,

I haven't been on the forum for quite a while. Sold some GS bikes, aquired a couple Yamahas, and I continue to work a bit at a time on my gr650 bobber project. I've done a lot of work on this previously wrecked bike. I thought I had it pretty much finished until I took it for a little ride yesterday. Things were going well until just before I pulled in my drive way. The bike died, all electronics off and that was it. No fuses blown. However... something kept running inside the engine. Probably 5 minute after everything else had stopped. Sounded like the area of the starter. When I got it in the garage, I checked the head light, and it turned on... then as the thing keep whirling (kinda sounded like that) the headlight wouldn't turn on. I checked my battery for charge once the sound subsided. No charge. I hooked it up to the charger. It won't hold a charge.

Any ideas? I was so... close.

Sounds like the starter is stuck (solenoid, maybe?) AND the starter clutch is not engaging.

.

Would the starter getting stuck because of solenoid problems total kill a battery? I know it was low in charge at the time of this happening. I also have experienced that if a battery drains all the way down then it won't accept a charge. Does all this seem reasonable.

Thanks

Uhhh, yeah. The starter draws a LOT more power than the rest of the bike.

Did you ever notice the size of the wires that feed the starter?

Ever wonder why they are so large?

.

Got it. I've worked on several bikes but I'm finding that my knowledge of the electrical side of things is very weak, and needs work. Thank you for explaining.

The battery won't charge at all, or won't hold a charge once charged up?

Won't charge. My charger... after a while said, check battery.

The bobber lives! Now starter solenoid and battery and things are as they were before. I appreciate the advice.
