A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS 1000 gaskets

Stay clear of the Athena base gasket, it's made from a material that can't take the compressive forces demanded of the application. The head gasket seems better though.

So we should just buy NOS or new Cometic base gaskets from now on?
Cometic said they can whip out any custom configuration (big bore, different thickness vs stock, etc) paper gaskets or composite head gasket in a week.
MLS head gaskets require a minimum quantity bulk purchase however.

I got a few of the GS1100G (& GS1000/GS850/GS750-big-bore) MLS Athena head gaskets and they meet my satisfaction plenty vs any composite gaskets.

I looked up a few other modrls, 750 & 850 8v bikes, & Partzilla shows those OEM head & base gaskets as unavailable as well... They do still list the egg shaped o-rings used on the oil feed passages on the base gaskets, however. Except for one of the 2 different thickness/years of GS1100G oil feed base gasket o-rings...

Also, i noted that a $25 cylinder head cover gasket is now $45, & a starter relay is now $64...
Welcome to the new ways of the world thanks to Covid...

Where did you get that time frame?
Cometic website says 5-6 weeks

From a phone call, but that was a year or two ago.
Paper gaskets they told me are no problem, they can cut them immediately or on short order if any alterations need made to the standard shape/size
The cfm composite head gaskets take a bit longer.

Update:

I ordered a head gasket directly from Comerica on Nov 22 and it just arrived. That's under 4 weeks

I picked up 2 OEM valve cover gaskets on Ebay.

I just need the oil pan gasket. There's a couple of pattern ones on Ebay, I'll wait and see in the new year

I have a Vesrah oil pan gasket for a 79 GS1000L that I am not going to use. You can have it for the cost to ship. Let me know. I am located in 43215.
